Today is the last day of Summer vacation. It feels more like the last day of quarantine to me. I know we are not done with Covid, but being able to send my baby bassets off to school full time, not that half and half stuff, feels wonderful. I am looking forward to dragging kids out of bed kicking and screaming, making lunches, and finding out last minute about projects due that day. Lost lunchboxes sound absolutely fantastic right now. I know it can all go back to Zoom at the drop of the hat, but for now I am going to enjoy the normal craziness.

We hide in shadows. Our planet is lost. We are the last humans, and we must go home.

Two thousand years ago, aliens destroyed Earth. Our fleets shattered. Billions died. The last humans fled a burning planet, heading to the stars.

Today we are still refugees. Hungry. Afraid. Our enemies hunt us everywhere.

So we hide. On distant asteroids. In rundown space stations. In deep caves on frozen worlds. And we dream.

Of green hills. Blue skies. Golden fields. We dream of Earth.

And for the first time, we have hope.

A few of us, just a handful of brave souls, form the Heirs of Earth. We are humans who stand tall. Who fight back. Aliens call us terrorists. The humans we save call us heroes. We have starships, weapons, and warriors. We can bring humanity home.

Earth is far. We have not seen her in many generations. But we have not forgotten. Earth is our heritage. Earth is our birthright. We will return!

Letters of a Woman Homesteader
by Elinore Pruitt Stewart
4.4 Stars (1,356 Reviews)
Genre: History | Essays & Correspondence

FREE for a limited time

This “warmly delightful, vigorously affirmative” memoir of a woman homesteader in early twentieth-century Wyoming inspired the acclaimed film Heartland (The Wall Street Journal).

In 1909, Elinore Pruitt answered an ad in the Denver Post to become Henry Clyde Stewart’s housekeeper on his homestead outside Burntfork, Wyoming. Elinore soon fell in love with the land’s vast, untamed beauty, and filed a claim for her own adjoining property under the Homestead Act. Over the next five years, she not only made a home for herself, but traveled extensively across the state, befriending every neighbor within a hundred miles.

Through it all — weddings and births, illnesses and snowstorms, changing seasons and changing times — Elinore maintained correspondence with her former employer Juliet Coney in Denver, Colorado. In vivid detail and with lively prose, Elinore told Juliet of life as a woman in the American West. First published in the Atlantic Monthly, these letters made their author an American icon of her time.
