Last night I got a massage. I finally redeemed that gift card that I received for Christmas back in 2013. Before the appointment started, they had me fill out the usual health forms with questions about pain and trouble areas. I circled the entire picture of the body to be sure I didn’t miss anything. When I got to the portion of the form that asked how often I would like to get a massage, I started getting a bit stressed. I would like one every day, but life doesn’t allow for that. Is this the kind of pressure I am going to get when I finally redeem all those gift cards I have accumulated? Yes I have quite a pile. I wanted all of them, I really like all of them and YES I will use them! BACK OFF!!! I circled the head a couple more times.

Two reporters investigate a grave robbery in a small Illinois town. It’s 1986. The tombstone says a teenage boy went into the coffin in 1941.

One reporter, Brian Morrison, is about forty, estranged from his wife. He’s smart, sensitive, literate, overly focused. He’s like a cat chasing string, quick to pounce.

The other reporter, Lee Ann Thomas, 30, is smart and sassy. She can manage Morrison–well, almost. But she is mercurial, leaving Morrison to wonder what she’s thinking, and if he can trust her.

Beginning in the graveyard, the two get onto a story that might produce a Pulitzer for their little paper. In chasing it, they lift the lid on killers, crooks, perverts and zealots, untangling a web of greed, deceit and murder that goes back almost half a century. They also unveil a love story, uncover a mystery, and bring unsung heroism to light.

Cemetery Plot is about the real world of good small-town newspapers that have worked for generations in America to keep things honest for people in their communities.
