The mornings are finally getting colder. I’m not complaining though. In fact I rather love it. The crisp morning of 44 degrees means I get to dust off my thick sweaters and snuggle into much more comfy clothes. This is the kind of weather that puts me in the mood for the holidays, but I better not let it suck me in too much or I will start drinking those disgusting pumpkin lattes. BLEGH!!

Nostalgic for your 1970s childhood? Me, too!

I am nationally syndicated humor columnist Tom Purcell (www.TomPurcell.com). My column runs in more than 200 newspapers across America.

In the past decade my readers have made it clear that they especially enjoy humor pieces that relive the misadventures of a typical 1970s childhood — so I wrote a book.

“An Apple Core, a Toilet: Misadventures of a 1970s Childhood” includes misadventures and fond memories that are relatable to millions of baby boomers, men and women alike.

It includes 22 stories about bike jumps that nearly killed us, vengeance on the sledding slopes, 6th grade puppy love, the old wooden stereo console, the embarrassment of getting the first David Cassidy shag haircut, a beloved family dog that ran away, going through the old photo box as a kid and later as an adult with my mother, a baby sister left behind at the drive-in theater, a regrettable incident in which an 11 year old kid clogs the family room toilet with an apple core, and many other tales from the ’70s.

These stories total approximately 40,000 words or 175 pages. Also, listen to my one-hour radio discussion about humorous ‘70s nostalgia at www.TomPurcell.com! And check out my collection of columns, “Comical Sense: A Lone Humorist Takes on a World Gone Nutty!”

Genre: Coming of Age | Short Stories

FREE for a limited time

DANNY BOY is a heart-warming story about a young girl, Catherine, who tells the tale of her childhood friend, Danny.

Catherine takes the reader on a journey through her childhood and her observations of how the public react to someone who is ‘different’. Her best friend is born with Downs Syndrome and Catherine becomes aware from an early age that people look at him strangely and keep a distance from him.

Danny Boy explores how one little girl came to see through the mask of disability and see the big beating heart which lies beneath, when others could not.

“This is such a beautiful story of great friendship without prejudice and unconditioned love. I had Goosebumps throughout the story and I was surprised when tears started pulling down my cheeks in the end.”
