I find Lego men hiding all around my house. Sometimes I think they are watching me or plotting against me when I am not looking. They stare, they wait, they watch with that smile on their face. I am extra nice to my sons stuffed robot, Bobot, picking him up off the floor and putting him in comfortable places with a pillow. Just in case he is the leader.

The young Berber narrator of Donkey Heart Monkey Mind has to learn the kind of perseverance and ingenuity it takes to survive in 1980’s Algeria, where his people are second-class citizens in a third world country. His tale opens when police brutally beat him for participating in a protest march. Knowing that he must leave his own country or suffer this kind of treatment forever, he begins wandering Europe and northern Africa, desperately seeking some alternative. He tries his hand as a street vendor and a pickpocket, is mistaken for a drug smuggler and an Egyptian spy, and he poses as Jewish to sneak into Israel and as a devout Muslim to escape notice in an Egyptian prison. He is eventually swept up in the wave of arrests following the “Black October” Algerian political riots of 1988. Drugged and shipped to a remote military prison, for months he is burned, brutalized, and held in solitary confinement. But in the end, his tale poignantly illustrates how even in the most desperate circumstances sometimes hope is found, help is offered, and inspiration strikes.

February 2024: Desperate to find refuge from the nuclear storm, a group of civilians discover a secret government bio-dome. Greeted by a hail of bullets and told to turn back, the frantic refugees stand their ground and are eventually permitted entry. But the price of admission is high.

283 years later… Sunny O’Donnell is a seventeen-year-old slave who has never seen the sun. She was born in the Pit, a subterranean extension of the bio-dome. Though life had never been easy, the last couple of months had become a nightmare. Her mom was killed in the annual Cull, and her dad thought it was a good time to give up on life. Reyes Crowe, her long-time boyfriend, was pressuring her to get married, even though it would mean abandoning her father.

She didn’t think things could get any worse until she was forced upstairs to the Dome to be a servant-girl at a bachelor party. That’s when she met Leisel Holt, the president’s daughter, and her fiance, Jack Kenner.

Now Sunny is wanted for treason. If they catch her, she’ll be executed.

She thought Leisel’s betrayal was the end. But it was just the beginning.

“Sunset Rising” is Book One of a series.

Trace the turbulent career of Air Force Captain Scott Camron in this apocalyptic thriller: Camron, paralyzed from the waist down after being shot down over Iraq during Desert Storm, finds himself trying to manage his paralysis and early medical retirement. Beginning a new career at the Air Force Academy as a civilian, he is intrigued by the discovery of a blood residue sample left over from the Shroud of Turin Research Project. This drives him to conduct a secret experiment using DNA from the pre-historic ‘Ice Man’ found frozen in the Alps, to prove the feasibility of reconstituting enough Shroud DNA to further his ambition to become a father in spite of his disability, and perhaps resurrect whoever had been buried in the shroud. The results are both astounding and confounding, as the Camron family becomes caught up in surviving a catastrophic flu pandemic followed by a super volcano erupting in mid-America which devastates the civilian leadership of the U.S. In the midst of the turmoil, Iran unexpectedly pushes the nuclear button and the chaos only gets worse. The world is left to wonder if this is the beginning of the End of Times.
