Yesterday was one of those days when I really missed having chickens. I dropped off a few pumpkins at my father in laws place. As you may remember our town has a lot of turkey running around. I see them everywhere. So I shouldn’t have been surprised when I put the pumpkin on his back patio, I was only two feet from the biggest turkey I ever saw. She was standing next to his birdbath probably just taking a nice few sips of refreshing drink when I barged in on her party. When I spotted her I nearly jumped five feet in the air. She, on the other hand, didn’t move an inch. She just looked at me like I was crazy. A crazy intruder. I can’t explain to you how she was looking at me that way. It’s not that her face was very expressive, but it was. She was so cute. I would have loved to stay and chat, but we were heading out for dinner. Do you think hubby would mind if I got just two little chickens?

THE GIRL FROM COLOMBIA

In 19th century New Jersey, a cold, cruel beast of a man plots an arranged marriage for his son… but the boy’s relationship with a mysterious foreign girl threatens everything.

New Jersey. 1890. Joseph Johnson arrives from London to see the property that his wealthy industrialist father, Samuel, has developed on the American coast. Riding through the dunes, the 19-year-old comes across a two-room cabin that houses his father’s 18-year-old adopted daughter, Isabel. Before this visit, Joseph knew nothing about the young woman, whom his father apparently saved from drowning off the coast of Colombia when she was small. To be fair, Joseph knows almost nothing about Samuel, either, as the man left him back in England to be raised by a nurse; his mother “disappeared.” Samuel now expects Joseph to marry Elizabeth Edwards, the beautiful daughter of a local doctor. Joseph likes Elizabeth, but he can’t get his mind off the mysterious Isabel, who everyone claims has a fatal disease. Nor does he know that Isabel almost succeeded in poisoning Samuel to death when she was younger. Isabel is anything but welcoming, but as she and Joseph get to know each other, long-held secrets threaten to come to light.

This is a dark, foreboding Victorian tale, with an arranged marriage, a mysterious character in Isabel, and enough intrigue to keep this a fast paced read while conveying the tenor and culture of the times. Simply brilliant.

The first in a series of cozy, heartfelt Christmas romances that will help you rediscover the magic of the holiday season.

After losing her job, her fiancé, and her home in one fell swoop, Natalie Belmont leaves the city without a plan… and without a working car. Suddenly stranded on the snowy backroads of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Natalie only needs a place to stay for the night, but the charming — and incredibly persuasive — innkeeper at The Mistletoe House has something much more festive in mind.

Now cast as one of Santa’s helpers in the tiny town of Chestnut Cove, Natalie is thrust into a Christmas wonderland brought to life, complete with a magical workshop, a snow-dusted sleigh, and a real-life reindeer. A very aromatic reindeer, one with a spleen-shattering hind kick.

For some people, this might be a dream come true (minus the reindeer), but Natalie has a problem, and it’s a big one: after a holiday tragedy upended her childhood, she no longer has the Christmas spirit.

But Chestnut Cove has a way of making miracles happen, and maybe a warm and welcoming community, a hundred-foot Christmas tree, and a small-town doctor with a heart of gold can change Natalie’s mind… and help her discover that the life she’s always dreamed of can be found in the most unexpected of places.
