Now that it’s back to school season, I just want to make an observation. Let me start by saying I am not a teacher. I do not work in any classrooms. I was pretty active with the PTO when my baby bassets were in school, but as soon as they hit junior high, I dropped off the planet. With that said, I am a thrifter. I spend a lot of time in thrift stores, estate sales, and garage sales. One thing I have observed is there are WAY too many mugs or cups out there that say “#1 Teacher”. I don’t think they need any more mugs. Unless that mug is full of cash, they don’t need a mug. Cup O Cash would be delightful. Like I said, I am not a teacher, but seeing the stacks and stacks of I Heart Teacher mugs on the thrift store shelves is saying something. Now… you can buy one of those mugs from a thrift store for a dollar, then fill it full of cash. That would be cool. Homemade card full of cash. Cash wrapped around cash. MONEY MONEY MONEY. Maybe a pack of glue sticks, with money lightly glued to them. Oh that would be fun. Okay, I am done for the morning. Cash money. OK BYEEE!!! Wine

“Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice.” Thus Robert Frost warns President Kennedy about the Shadow, before departing on a classified mission on the first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus.

Past and present collide in this thriller. In the present, on the Nazca Plain in Chile, an old woman has been studying ancient lines in the ground for decades. Now she finally understands their terrifying message.

In 480 BC, King Leonidas leads 300 Spartans to Thermopylae to try to delay the massive Persian Army. Known only to the King, they have an even more important mission: to escort and protect a powerful priestess to a mystical gate through which she can travel to help save the world. It’s a mission for which Leonidas will gladly sacrifice his own, and his men’s lives.

In the present, tremors deep inside the Earth threaten the world. Eric Dane races against time to find the key to stopping this assault from the dark Shadow. He must reach across time to the Spartans and the priestess they escort to find the key to this defense. And in doing so, he must travel to the Space Between, the boundary between our world, and the world of the Shadow.

The Note
by Reggie Turk

One year ago Chellie Morris drove through a stop sign–less than a mile from her house–into the stampeding traffic of State Route 30. Nathan, her husband, arrived home after the accident to find a four-word note on a bookshelf; not a suicide note, not a goodbye, not even a reminder for something he might forget, just four unexplainable words.
Too much alcohol and too little sleep have turned the last 365 days into a stagnant haze. Painful flashes from the last day, uneven rewinds of the past, and the haunting words of the note chaotically rumble and roll through his mind.
Four words–only four words left.

As Charlotte’s mission drags on, their battles of will turn into something far more dangerous: desire. She knows she should stay focused. That she can’t afford to feel anything for a man she’s sworn to kill. But the more she learns about Nicolo — his loyalty, his wounds, his hidden honor — the harder it is to finish the job.

The Trail of Tears: The Forced Removal of the Five Civilized Tribes
by Charles River Editors
4.3 Stars (679 Reviews)

“I fought through the War Between the States and have seen many men shot, but the Cherokee Removal was the cruelest work I ever knew.” – Georgia soldier on the Trail of Tears

The “Five Civilized Tribes” are among the best known Native American groups in American history, and they were even celebrated by contemporary Americans for their abilities to adapt to white culture. But tragically, they are also well known tribes due to the trials and tribulations they suffered by being forcibly moved west along the “Trail of Tears”.

Though the Trail of Tears applied to several different tribes, it is most commonly associated today with the Cherokee. The Cherokee began the process of assimilation into European America very early, even before the establishment of the Unites States, but it is unclear what benefits that brought the tribe. Throughout the colonial period and after the American Revolution, the Cherokee struggled to satisfy the whims and desires of American government officials and settlers, often suffering injustices after complying with their desires. Nevertheless, the Cherokee continued to endure, and after being pushed west, they rose from humble origins as refugees new to the southeastern United States to build themselves back up into a powerhouse both economically and militarily. The Cherokee ultimately became the first people of non-European descent to become U.S. citizens en masse, and today the Cherokee Nation is the largest federally recognized tribe in the United States, boasting over 300,000 members.
