I went for an actual bike ride this morning. Past my street and down another. I was feeling confident in myself and the bike, so I kept going. What a scene I must have been. There I was, pedaling down the path, passing people in fancy bikes with their fancy bike outfits. You could almost hear all the cobwebs on my bike rustling in the wind. Not much wind mind you, I am slow. But there was a little wind. The spiders were not too thrilled to have the home that had been dormant for over a year, suddenly be flying down the road. For the first quarter mile I left a trail of rusty water. My grey sweatpants and black sweatshirt with a faded graphic gave off the vibe that this was in fact my first rodeo. If that didn’t scream rookie, the heavy open mouth breathing did. So… same time tomorrow?

Prohibition in the United States: A History From Beginning to End
by Hourly History
4.3 Stars (482 Reviews)

FREE for a limited time

For thirteen years, from 1920 to 1933, the transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages were prohibited in America. This “Noble Experiment” was undertaken because its supporters believed that alcohol was the single major cause of both crime and poverty. They believed that prohibiting alcohol would lead to the end of poverty and slum housing in the United States and that prisons and jails would no longer be needed.
However, the precise opposite proved to be true. Prohibition led directly to rising crime rates, widespread illegal behavior amongst ordinary Americans, and a loss of respect for laws, law enforcement, and for the apparatus of government. How could something based on such good intentions go so disastrously wrong?
