I think this is going to give me a bit of relief from a lot of the concerns I have about properly raising a small dog. I have never had a small dog before, so this has been a bit of an adjustment for me. The main reason we even got a small dog was my youngest basset’s fear of dogs. I know what you are thinking…”But you have dogs?” Yes, we had a wonderful basset mix named Ellie Mae, and we have a mystery mutt named Jethro. Both pups were well into adulthood when children came into the picture and knew how to act properly around people, so they wee never scary. My oldest boy is just fine with dogs, but my youngest has had a rough time, since all my friends have large dogs. He has been known to sit in the car crying out of fear. Hubby and I thought if we started with a very small dog he might warm up to other dogs. HOLY BROWNIE BITES!!! We actually did something right as parents. I have never seen my youngest love a dog so much. He even held her and protected her from a larger dog who was trying to sniff her. He didn’t run, or cry. He stood his ground, held Junebug tight, and told the other dog ..NO!  I couldn’t be prouder.

Keeper of the Scale (contemporary women’s fiction): The Diet Buddies
by Debbie Cohen, Elke Barter
3.8 Stars (19 Reviews)
Genre: Contemporary Fiction | Women’s Fiction

FREE for a limited time

Because life can’t be measured according to a number on a scale…

“NO meeting each other outside of ShopSmart. No exceptions!” vow three women who, though decades apart, share the same, ageless goal of dieting.

But sticking to their diets proves harder than expected, as well as their vow to not become involved in each others lives outside of their weekly weigh-ins at the superstore.

Join thirty-something Janine and her diet buddies, middle-aged Margarite and college student Rebecca, as they laugh, cry, and, in the end, learn more about each other and themselves than how to shed some pounds…

DIET BUDDIES. FRIENDS. WOMEN.

Janine, Margarite and Rebecca are three dynamic women with seemingly little in common except the desire to lose weight. Armed with a hot pink scale, they form a unique diet support group, holding weekly “weigh-ins” in a rather unusual location — the snack area of their local big chain superstore. The goal was to save time, by combining meetings with shopping, but talk quickly moves beyond dieting. Slowly, the women connect on a much deeper level, becoming less obsessed with what they’ve got to lose, and focusing instead on how much they have to gain… from life, and one another:

JANINE is the mother hen and driving force behind the “Diet Buddies Dropouts” break-away support group. The 35-year-old stay-at-home mom left an exciting career in the fast paced world of public relations to look after her kids. Channeling the same drive and energy she used to put into her work towards her new, domestic life, she runs an organized, immaculate home, becomes a soccer mom, head of the PTA, and whiz at arranging playdates. But living off her kids’ leftovers has left her forty pounds heavier than her normal weight. She tells herself if she could just get her weight back under control, everything would be perfect. Yet, even as the pounds drop, she can’t help feeling that there’s still something missing… something more than extra pounds.

MARGARITE is an attractive divorced middle-aged single mom of two teenagers. She’s become something of a celebrity with her best-selling cookbook series. Though slender and fit, she thinks, like so many women, that being even thinner will make her appear younger. Fast approaching the “big 5-0,” she believes losing weight is the perfect way to show off to her ex-husband how great she is doing on her own. It’s been five years since they split up, but she can’t seem to say no to jumping through hoops for him whenever he comes to town. Meanwhile, he has had no trouble relocating and dating other women. She knows she needs to move on too, but struggles to let go of the past and begin building a new life of her own.

REBECCA is a young college student and talented, budding artist who dreams of graduating, backpacking throughout Europe, and making it as a painter. Her older fiancé, however, has other plans — like marriage and starting a life together. But all Rebecca can think about is her art and how to afford a dream summer getaway. She believes modeling may be her ticket, but is told her size six figure won’t cut it in today’s competitive market. While dieting she starts to ponder more than how to fit into the new “perfect size two.” She begins to reflect over painful areas of her life and question her future.

Surprise to me, Junebug doesn’t have most of the qualities of puppiness that I don’t like. She doesn’t yap, or cry all night, and she isn’t mouthy and bitey unless you get her going. The only thing she does that I don’t like is go to the bathroom inside. ERG!! I keep finding little surprises is crazy places. So gross. Elizabeth Bennet Darcy, a newlywed, finds that adjusting to the expectations of London society during the season imposes a vastly different set of expectations upon her. Her upbringing, although respectable, did not prepare her for rigorous adherence to the ways of the haute monde.

When she is asked to chaperone the daughter of Lady Descartes, a former actress married to a member of the aristocracy, Elizabeth is hesitant to take on the responsibility, particularly when the young lady, a lively young woman who shuns her genteel upbringing and goes by the name of Tommy, takes an interest in a young man who has been disinherited by his father because of his ambition to become a poet.

Ultimately, the drama must be resolved at a gathering at Pemberley, at which the redoubtable Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Mr. Collins and his wife, Elizabeth’s friend Charlotte, the Bingleys, and the warring parents of the young couple are present for a confrontation that tests Darcy’s trust in his wife and Elizabeth’s confidence in her role as the mistress of Pemberley.

Trudy in particular is not going to take one ounce of shenanigans from little Junebug. Junebug is fascinated by the ladies and runs up to see them when they are out on the lawn. She has even taken to chasing them a little bit. No a full chase to kill, more like a romp at while the ladies walk away annoyed. Not Trudy though. She turns around, faces Junebug head on, and chases her right back to where she came from. They only get a few steps before Junebug is gone in a flash. I don’t think it will take much to teach little Junebug that it’s not proper to harass the ladies, but for now they will just have to tolerate the new baby.

Down on Her Luck: Alaina’s Story (What’s luck got to do with It Book 2)
by Carmen DeSousa
4.3 Stars (7 Reviews)
Genre: Women’s Fiction | Romance | Contemporary Fiction

FREE for a limited time

Thirty-nine-year-old struggling actress Alaina Ackerman isn’t just down on her luck today; lady luck has packed up and left town for heaven only knows where. Instead of ending up homeless on the streets of New York City in November, Alaina accepts her mother’s holiday invitation and heads home to Pittsburgh for a much-needed break. Maybe even to give up on acting altogether.

The last thing Alaina expects is to be happy returning home, especially when fate not only tosses an abandoned puppy into her lap, but also practically embeds Markus Klein into her life. That wouldn’t be so bad if she hadn’t spent the last twenty years trying to forget the night they crossed the “just friends” line. Now, torn between a love she thought she lost, and one she never knew existed, that vicious harpy some call fate dangles Alaina’s dream opportunity — a leading role — in front of her. Her only problem… Going after her dream could jeopardize her chance at love.

As if a new puppy, love, and career aren’t complicated enough, Alaina discovers that her mother and sister are keeping a secret from her. The revelation might be just enough to get Alaina’s life heading in the right direction… or send her over the edge.

WARNING: Although there are many adult situations in this contemporary women’s fiction with a hint of humor and romance, if say… something crazy happened and a famous producer adapted this novel into a movie, it would have a PG-13 rating. There are no erotic scenes, no graphic violence, and while there are a few allowed-on-TV curse words, there aren’t a plethora of gratuitous foul words. Oh, and if you were looking for a cliffhanger, you won’t find that here either. While “Down on Her Luck” is a follow-up story to “Some Lucky Woman,” it is a stand-alone novel. Please proceed at your own risk.

Someone wants Liam Quinn dead, but he’s not sure if it’s the aging TV actor, the aging mobster, or one of a bevy of local gals who have him in their sights. The desert’s a tough place, and Arizona is a long way from his beloved Philadelphia. The Nora situation is more convoluted than ever, a hippie with a mean streak has a gun to his head, two goons are digging his grave and the last time he stepped in the ring, some guy knocked him out without even touching him. Still, Quinn would tell you it beats dealing with his love life and family back in Philly, at least marginally. And that’s what happens — well, that and a dead guy — when Quinn Goes West.

The Cows of Hobson’s Pond: Mostly True Stories of Growing Up Kansas
by Rick McNary
4.7 Stars (25 Reviews)
Genre: Biographies & Memoirs | Humor & Entertainment | Children’s eBooks

FREE for a limited time

Somewhere, some cow’s therapist knows everything there is to know about Rick McNary.

For a bored child living in rural Kansas in the sixties, frolicking in Hobson’s Pond was as adventurous as being Jacques Cousteau on the Atlantic Ocean. In a country kid’s imagination, the pond teemed with exotic marine life, pirates and sunken treasure.
In reality, the pond was a muddy hole filled with finger-length catfish and grumpy old bullfrogs. In addition, The Cows of Hobson’s Pond believed they had the inalienable right to soak their udders in the water like it was a spa. Whenever Rick and his buddies went swimming, they had to run the cows out first. This frequently backfired and, instead, the cows chased them.
Rick pokes fun at himself, his family, the cows and life in rural Kansas. There are stories about how the cows were responsible for starting the streaking fad, the reason little boys should never practice medicine, why his brothers called him the Elmer Fudd of hunters and the day his Mom washed his mouth out with soap.
Laugh along with Rick who claims the stories are mostly true but, to avoid being sued, he changed a few names and made up the parts about the cows.

From place to place, person to person, they move. All the time Maggie hopes for kindness that will take her a few miles further, and keeps the secret of what she has done from her children and new acquaintances.

In the quiet, still moments of her travels, she recounts her own childhood, as well as the few days that led up to the event from which she is fleeing. As Maggie covers mile after mile, she begins to understand how no one event can be isolated from another, how life, in its strangeness and mystery, seems to gather itself as we go, only to reveal why later–or maybe never.

In Maggie’s words: “I’d like to say I know what makes people good and bad, but I can’t say I do. Or at least I’d like to say I believe most people, including myself, are good, that we do the best we can. But I ain’t sure of that either. I guess what I do believe is we just live the best we can and the rest is what we think we have to do at the time.”

Welcome To My Neighborhood https://www.bookbasset.com/2017/09/16/welcome-to-my-neighborhood/ https://www.bookbasset.com/2017/09/16/welcome-to-my-neighborhood/#comments Sat, 16 Sep 2017 14:28:35 +0000 https://www.bookbasset.com/?p=19754 Everyone needs a best friend, and little Jerry is certainly the one for Junebug. My trips to the dog parks haven’t been all that great, since it seems I haven’t been able to find too many small pups she wants to play with. Even when I do, Junebug is still too distracted by the big ones to go out and play. Yesterday my partner in crime and I arranged a little play-date with her pup Jerry. She had adopted her him the same weekend, from the same organization as Junebug. It’s possible they were even housemates. When Jerry arrived, Junebug lost it. She was so excited I was worried she was going to have a little heart attack. For an hour and a half those two played at full force. In total they had about three and a half hours together, and they certainly made the most of it. For Junebugs happiness I think I am going to need to have Jerry over more often. I think everyday should be enough.

Note: NO animals are harmed in this romp through the backwoods!

On opening day of bear hunting season in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, a game warden is murdered right under Little Donny’s tree stand. Little Donny disappears into the backwoods, forcing sixty-six-year-old Gertie to use her “unique” investigative techniques to find her favorite grandson. Gertie’s search is hampered by her pin-curled bodyguard Kitty, her man-hungry friend Cora Mae, and Grandma Johnson — who should be mushing peas between her new false teeth in the Escanaba nursing home instead of setting up camp at Gertie’s place. To top it off, Gertie’s son Blaze, the local sheriff, seems more concerned with arresting his mom for cruising down Highway M35 without a driver’s license than finding Little Donny or catching the killer.

As children, Meli and Case romped and played together along the Chattahoochee river, but once Case joined the Union army after going to West Point, everything changed for Meli and her family.

Sherman’s troops are now on the way and so is the end of the South as Meli knew it. She and her family are separated, and living in constant fear and danger.
Meli and her beloved black friend and former slave, Hattie, are taken prisoner and shipped off to the Confederate women’s prison in Louisville, Kentucky. A short time earlier Hattie had been raped and was pregnant. Meli tries to take care of the girl, find family members, and just stay alive.

The women’s prison is a worse nightmare than anything Meli could have imagined. Dr. Walker, a vicious, insane woman, beats the prisoners and starves them. Meli realizes she and Hattie must escape. Meli takes on Dr. Walker and comes close to killing her. When the two women finally get away from the prison, they are lost but find a place to hide at Sam Sullivan’s local saloon. All Meli knows is she and Hattie must find a way back to Vickery Creek. Or die trying.
But one more surprise is in store for Meli… Lt.Colonel Case Hamilton is in Louisville and when the two meet up after the years of being apart, Meli is torn between love and hate. She still loves Hamilton but hates him too for having become a Union soldier and possibly is even responsible for deaths in Meli’s family.

Sidge knows the rituals of the Stormblade Temple in meticulous detail. He has mastered every word and phrase of the twelve thousand mantras. Sworn to protect mankind, he is a model acolyte in every way. Every way except one.

He isn’t human.

Sidge has never known his own people, an insectoid race more often used for menial labor than meditation. Adopted by an eccentric human mentor, the temple is his entire life. Yet for the other acolytes, his presence is an affront to their vigil against an ancient foe who once enslaved mankind.

Dark omens follow Sidge on his first pilgrimage. The Wisdom of the mighty storm dragon, Vasheru, seeks a new vessel to lead the temple and the most likely candidate sees Sidge as an abomination. He and his mentor begin a desperate attempt to compete for the title. But an encounter with a streetwise woman named Kaaliya sets off a chain of events millennia in the making which will reshape Sidge’s destiny – and the course of an entire age.

His first journey outside the temple walls will not only test Sidge’s faith but his sense of identity as he races to ensure his beloved temple does not fall into the wrong hands.

Mosquito Heights
by Greg Liles
4.8 Stars (5 Reviews)
Genre: Coming of Age | Humor & Entertainment

FREE for a limited time

“Mosquito Heights” is the true story of my childhood while growing up in the small central Illinois city of Marquette Heights. How my love for adventure and exploration was put to the test nearly every day in this small village surrounded by trees, streams, and wildlife, and how the friendships I developed along the way have been life-enduring.

But it’s much more than a story about my childhood; it’s a trip down memory lane for anyone who reads it. And if you find your childhood was similar to mine, and catch yourself laughing at the stupid things I did, remembering something that you did, then more power to you, because I loved every minute of mine.

Me and my two best buddies built forts, camped out, and played in places we called Sand Hill, Red Devil’s Canyon, and The Desert. We spent nearly as much time in the branches of the trees than we did on the ground, enjoying all the daredevil feats we could evoke. And we did a lot of things we weren’t supposed to, but we bonded, survived, became blood-brothers for life, and the knowledge we gained while growing up enabled us to become men proud of our heritage.

If you grew up here, follow me through my grade school years, during my times of family discord, and pubescent confusion, through the wooded adventure-lands of Marquette Heights, to the unforgiving playgrounds of the local schoolyard and see if you don’t say, “I remember that,” at least a dozen times.

Even if you’ve never been to Marquette Heights I’m sure you’ll find this book humorous, heart warming, and fun to read, as you learn about all the crazy things me and my friends got involved in and how people never seemed to care. Things were different then and so were the people. We didn’t lock our doors and people didn’t erect fences just to mark their boundaries and keep you off their property. We respected each other more then and seldom did anything that would affect that premise.

Let me take you back to your childhood, wherever that may have been, and see if you can connect with those who lived in Marquette Heights. I think you will.

We all have a hometown of which we have fond memories. This is the story about mine.
