There is a giant hole in the backyard. Like… really really deep. It’s weird to see the yard with such a huge chunk taken out of it. My hubby’s dream of having a pond in the backyard is actually happening. I have been busy with work, so I haven’t had a chance to go stand in the hole yet, but that is definitely on my Todo list today. I may be an adult, but the kid in me is overpowering, and I want to go stand in the deep hole. If a few Hot Wheels followed me in, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. Just saying. The guys doing the work, only work Monday through Wednesday, so nothing is going to happen again until Monday. Until then I will most certainly spent a lot of time going outside and looking at the hole and telling whoever is there that it is a pretty deep hole. Yep. I’m sure they will agree with me.

Only two men have the courage to stand against the Hopkins gang — a former Confederate officer and an ex-slave.
The average life expectancy for a marshal in Topaz, Arizona, is three weeks. Down-on-his-luck Clay Chandler takes the marshal’s job out of desperation. Clay has barely settled into the job when Vance Hopkins drunkenly guns down a black man. Clay arrests Vance for murder, but Wes Hopkins and his gang run Topaz, and they demand that Vance be released — or else. Clay has given his word to uphold the law, though, and he’ll do that even if it means losing his life.
No one else in Topaz thinks a dead black man is worth taking on the Hopkins gang — no one but a former slave named Essex Johnson, who was the murdered man’s friend. Ex-Confederate Clay and Essex can’t stand each other, but Clay reluctantly swears Essex in as his deputy. The two of them are aided by a prostitute named Julie, who had her face carved up by the Hopkins gang. Wes Hopkins gives Clay a deadline to release Vance, or the gang is going to come and take him.
The question is, will the Hopkins gang kill Clay and Essex, or will Clay and Essex kill each other first?

Love for a Deaf Rebel: Schizophrenia on Bowen Island
by Derrick King
(106 Reviews)
FREE for a limited time
Love for a Deaf Rebel introduces readers to Pearl, a vivacious Canadian born into a silent world. With pathos and nostalgia, the hearing author recounts his roller-coaster ride with a deaf maverick, who, unknown to him, had paranoid schizophrenia. We follow their encounters through actual conversations written before the author learned sign language; we go on their motorcycle ride to Guatemala; we watch as the happy couple moves to Bowen Island, a community with just three paved roads, where Pearl and the author marry and build their dream home and hobby farm. They encounter one obstacle after another while building their life together as Pearl’s perception of reality — and, crucially, their perception of each other — begins to change. There are other books about schizophrenia in the family, such as Hidden Valley Road, and about deaf-hearing relationships, such as Children of a Lesser God, but none that tells the true story of a woman who struggled with both disabilities, and her final tumultuous romance.
