SWIM: Gripping, unputdownable WW1 historical fiction, inspired by true events: The astonishing tale of Lucy Morton
by Lisa Brace
4.5 Stars (101 Reviews)

FREE for a limited time

Paris, 1924. The Olympics.

Lucy Morton, an ambitious Blackpool swimmer, waits to find out if she has defeated her American rival. If she has, she’ll become the first British woman to win Gold in an individual event. At 26, she’s a veteran of the sport, competing against the odds in a world where women’s achievements often go uncelebrated.

If she wins, it will be despite the car accident she survived just 48 hours before — one that left her with five missing teeth, a cracked rib, and unconscious until the morning of the biggest race of her life.

Her journey began as a 10-year-old who nearly drowned the first time she tried to swim, thrown into a pool to overcome her ‘dunce-like’ ways. Yet Lucy’s resilience and dedication saw her rise to become a trailblazing athlete, breaking World Records and competing during air raids, while the suffragettes fought their own battles and the First World War raged on.

Set against the political backdrop of 1910s-1920s, Swim is a compelling work of historical fiction about pioneering women in sports history, courage in the face of sexism and politics, and the extraordinary story of Britain’s first female Olympic champion.

Not That It Matters
by A. A. Milne
4.2 Stars (72 Reviews)

FREE for a limited time

The creator of Winnie-the-Pooh shares his musings on some of the matters of his day in this delightful collection of essays, short stories, and poems.

Not That It Matters is “a collection of essays from the end of that extraordinary silver age of English belles-lettres at the turn of the last century, when men such as Shaw and Belloc earned their daily bread by scribbling in newspapers and magazines about anything they could scrape a thousand or so words out of: socialism, dogs, the weather, how they celebrated Christmas, capital punishment, Wagner. For those who like this sort of thing, this volume is very nearly perfect. There are pieces on snobbery, oranges, cricket, bad fiction, ‘Smoking as a Fine Art’ (‘My first introduction to Lady Nicotine was at the innocent age of eight’), chess, thermometers, Holy Writ (‘Isaiah was the ideal author… He kept to one style’), and — prophetically — those bores who fetishize ‘good brown ale'” (National Review).

“Milne writes on goldfish, daffodils, writing personal diaries, the charm of lunch, intellectual snobbery, and even what property program presenters would now call ‘kerb appeal’ — but which was simply ‘looking at the outside of a house’ in Milne’s day… It is still a delight and a joy to have Not That It Matters and its ilk waiting on my shelf.” — Stuck in a Book
