I am being so dramatic right now. This cold or whatever I have is pretty bad. The cough is painful, but I just couldn’t wait to see what changed in the garden while I was gone. It did not disappoint. Quite a few irises, tulips, and daffodils have bloomed, and a few shrubs I thought were dead are showing little green buds. WONDERFUL! I can’t help but act like a sickly woman from the Victorian era though. I was walking around, acting feeble, and in a British accent demanding someone get me my shawl before I catch a death. I don’t own a shawl, and there was no one around. Meh… I got a giggle out of it.

The Journey (The Journey Novels Book 1)
by Conrad Jones
4.4 Stars (1,247 Reviews)
Genre: Politics & Social Sciences

FREE for a limited time

This is the most memorable and gripping novel I have read in a very long time. It will stay with me.
This should be on every school reading list.
A modern-day reflection of life in our time.
It is for fans of The Pianist, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and similar.
Jones is a prolific thriller writer but this is his masterpiece.
I Couldn’t put this down. Fast-paced from the beginning. Get your tissues out for this one.
An incredible story, which will haunt me for a long time.

The Journey is a must-read thriller. The gripping story of a young boy and his family, driven from their home by war and indiscriminate violence. Like millions of others, they attempt the treacherous journey across their war-torn continent, trying to reach the safety of Europe. The truth is, Europe doesn’t want them and thousands die every month at the hands of thieves and profiteering men to whom life is cheap. The story is fast-paced, at times heart-breaking but it will pull you along at 100 miles an hour. It will make you think and it will make you question your perception of refugees.

Most of all it will make you ask if your family was in peril, what would you do?

A high-powered criminal defense attorney seeks redemption… in the most corrupt town in New England.

In 1894, Whitby, Massachusetts, better known as Shipwreck Point to its residents, personifies the excesses of the Gilded Age. Titus Strong, lawyer to the rich and famous, left Boston for the seaside town to escape the publicity from his most recent case. As well as his guilty conscience.

Elisabeth Wade, an independent, intelligent young woman in need of a job, has lived in Whitby all her life. She knows the people, the places, and where the bodies are buried. Sometimes literally.

Katie Sullivan, owner of the Honey House, may not have a respectable position, but she is respected. And she’s very protective of her girls. When a drunken lighthouse keeper tries to rape one of them, Katie threatens him. In front of witnesses, including Titus Strong.

Cleopatra’s Nose: Randomness in History
by Jakob Sjolander
Genre: History

FREE for a limited time

History. It’s a mess.

Chaos rules world history, and many times the smallest things have had vast effect. Again and again the course of history has been pushed in one direction or another, like a feather in the wind. Over thousands of years, even the most unlikely event becomes likely.

Nothing is certain except uncertainty.

Learn how:
1. A dropped helmet destroyed an empire
2. A coin toss decided the fate of Hollywood
3. A scientist forgets to clean his plates and discovered penicillin
4. And much, much, more!

After writing two books on mankind’s failed attempts to predict the future, Jakob Sjolander turns to the reason why we fail: Randomness.

Imagine a world shaken by assassinations, scandals, mutated viruses, wars, and serendipitous discoveries. That world is our own. The idea of history’s stately march is an illusion caused by our knowledge of the present. Randomness lurks everywhere, always ready to pounce on our attempts to rationalize our world.

See the true madness of history rather than the tidied-up version taught in school.
