I really can’t complain too much about yesterday’s storm. The flooding didn’t touch my front yard much at all. I did lose a few plants to the heavy rain and wind, but nothing that won’t grow back next year. My backyard pretty much suffered the same, but fixable damage. It was my side yard that was hit a bit hard. One of my raised planters was hit so hard with rain that it completely flooded, the bottom collapsed, and a lower side board broke away. Looking at the mess I think I will just make it a raised bed on the ground now. I didn’t like the way it was ruining the side of the house anyway. The way too overgrown Pineapple sage is so heavy with water that it is blocking my path to the rest of the yard. I hate to trim it back since the birds, bugs, and bees still love it so much. I imagine their food source is starting to dwindle. I always have the option of just closing the gates back there and letting it do what it wants. Just shut it and forget it. Might have to try that. I just can’t make up my mind.

Suddenly-widowed Maisie sets out to clear her late husband’s collection; wonky furniture and balding rugs, bolts of material for upholstery projects he never got round to, gloomy pictures and outmoded electronics, other people’s trash brought home from car boot sales and rescued from the tip. The hoard is endless, all part of Clifford’s waste-not way of thinking in which everything, no matter how broken or obscure, can be re-cycled or re-purposed into something useful. Now, it appears to Maisie more grimly than ever as what it is: junk.
As Maisie disassembles his stash she is forced to confront the issues that drove her husband to squirrel away other people’s rubbish. Finally, in the last bastion of his accumulation, she discovers the key to his hoarding and understands – much too late – the man she married.
