Today is the day! I am going to check out a beehive someone is getting selling because he is moving. By the sounds of it, the hive has been in one spot, untouched for over two or three years. This really is a big gamble. The odds aren’t really in my favor either, since this is the first time I have ever bought a colony from anyone, and I am going alone. I have to figure out for myself if the colony is healthy. This is something I would definitely need a experienced beekeeper to help me with, but as usual I just throw both hands in the air and jump right in. Right into what? I have no idea. I will tell you when I land. This method of doing things has mostly served me well. My original plan was to drive the hour out to where the bees are located and watch their activity on a warm sunny day. I just want to see if there is a lot of activity going in and out of the hive, and if they are bringing in pollen. I was then going have the owner close up the colony Friday when all the foragers have returned for the night, and then to come back on Saturday morning with hubby to pick them up. I can’t see myself being that patient. I might just stay until dark and grab them tonight. Typical me….get those hands in the air.
