What the heck is going on in my county! I love Sonoma County, with the rolling hills, vineyards, and hot air balloons on crisp sunny mornings, but something dark is happening. I am seeing post after post of runaway chickens! Yesterday alone I saw five posts of chickens found on this road and on that road. What are they doing? Where are they going? So many are not able to complete their journey because they keep getting picked up by the authorities. Someone should just follow one of them and see where she ends up. They very well may not be lost, and humans keep messing up their plans. I am keeping an eye on the goats in town, see what they are up to. If that one just goes to Starbucks for snacks again, then I will rest easy. If not….

Official verdict: Suicide. But why would that vigorous department chairman kill himself? To avoid disgrace? Those rumored ventures on the dark side? Some other secret life? Visiting professor Preston Barclay wonders. But his questions bring no answers, only anonymous threats. He has enough problems already, proving himself on a strange campus while radical faculty do all they can to undermine him. Worse yet, that sexy siren assigned as his assistant complicates his courtship of the beautiful Mara Thorn.

While Press keeps asking questions, Mara’s research reveals a cancer of criminal activity that permeates the community and even the campus itself. The more Press questions, the more dangerous the threats against him become, and the more determined he grows to clear his friend’s name.

But can Press and Mara’s stumbling efforts prevail against the entrenched forces of the police, the campus radicals, and an unseen but powerful criminal organization that increasingly puts their lives in danger… ?

From Publishers Weekly

Two professors accused of murder on a Christian college campus must find the killer in a whodunit that plays to the beat of a unique soundtrack. The main character and narrator, Preston Barclay, suffers with musical hallucinations that started when his wife died and music passed from Faith’s soul into mine. Repeated references to specific music he’s hearing from his internal musicians distracts in this second novel from a war veteran with a Ph.D. in English literature. Barclay’s female colleague is Wiccan, hired as part of the university’s new policy of inclusion. Her blue gaze burns Preston, but their budding friendship intrigues. Suspended by the administration and suspected by police of killing a fellow professor, evidence mounts against the pair, even as they conduct a risky investigation of their own. While the style is usually witty and sensitive, puns and dialogue are overexplained, and prose tends toward the pedagogical. However, the ending has an unpredictable and satisfying twist, and both characters’ journey toward faith will resonate with Christian readers.

Written for the General Market (G) (I): Contains little or no; sexual dialogue or situations, violence, or strong language. May also contain some content of an inspirational/religious nature. Similar mystery novels in this genre may be categorized as: cozy mysteries, murder mysteries, women sleuths, and murder mystery romance.
