It’s National Pizza Day? Is this true? I usually ignore such silly days, but when they say PIZZA, I stand up and take notice. Actually I am still sitting, but I am more alert and a bit perkier, so there’s that. This slightly makes up for the fact that yesterday I lost all my progress on Sugar Smash and was reduced from level 250 down to level 1. I also realize that my concerns today are a bit out of whack. It’s only day two of my seven week life improvement challenge, and my brain has me thinking about pretty lame stuff. If I would just eat the handful of chocolate chips, my brain would reset back to normal.

Duty outweighs fear as Logan Falcone, a retired Marine, is secretly asked to hunt down a terror cell in the U.S. However, what he finds is much more terrifying than anything he’s fought through before.

This fast-paced thriller will pull you into the story with vivid descriptions allowing you to experience the emotions of war and terror first hand. Each heart-stopping moment allows a glimpse inside the mind of a terrorist, Amir, as he descends from Army hero to traitor, revealing how we’re all guided by emotions.

Logan Falcone had finally stopped reliving the events in Iraq when a phone call from Samantha forced him to leave his detached reality. A terrorist attack in Paris hinted at American involvement and she feared a cover-up. A second attack, this time in Chicago, starts to open a deceitful door into a terrorist cell. Logan uses his old connections, a group of recon marines, and as much assistance as Samantha can give without compromising her job with the FBI. Leads fall through their fingers and it appears there’s a leak in the government. In the end, it comes down to Logan’s intuitive training and ability to read people. Will Logan be able to tap into who he used to be? Or will his fears of another loss dictate his actions, causing even more attacks and American deaths?

There is no time to sightsee around Washington, D.C. Travis returns to the small town of Chico, in Arizona Territory, scene of a family wedding. Working under presidential authority, he hires a crew to accompany him on this mission: twin brother Thomas, also a U.S. Marshal, and his new wife, Elizabeth; brother John, former Pinkerton Man; brother Matthew, a deputy sheriff from San Francisco; and Cochinay, native tracker and Elizabeth’s half-brother.

With everyone prepared and their necessities gathered together, they set off on the trek to Rancho Riata, near San Juan Capistrano in Southern California.

Martha Waring, second wife and now widow of Henry, and her two stepdaughters, Rosamond and Olivia, welcome the posse to their ranch. However, Henry’s lawyer, Richard Hotchkiss, is not so welcoming. In fact, by the next morning, when Travis is ready to begin his inquiries, the lawyer has inexplicably decamped, along with Henry’s secretary, Reuben Harwood, and his ranch manager, Bentley Lawton.

The hunt is on, to find not only these three Waring employees, but also the mysterious “Chief,” who exists somewhere in the background and may have been involved in Henry Waring’s death.

Travis is aided in the investigation by his own posse and by Rosamond Waring, a spunky sassy girl wearing wire-framed spectacles. Travis, confirmed bachelor and vehement opponent of marriage, finds himself falling hard for Rose. All the more so when, on her own, she deliberately enters the lion’s den, leaving him torn between apprehending a gang of desperadoes and rescuing the woman he loves.

Victoria McCutcheon even admits as much, right before she asks Char to solve her husband’s murder. What? A suspected black widow who wants her husband’s murderer brought to justice? Victoria McCutcheon is either the most skillful liar Char has ever encountered or someone else has spun a web of lies to cover their murderous tracks. But who, and why?

With no hard evidence to go on, it’s up to Char and her ability as a human lie detector to break this case wide open. Assuming that someone doesn’t crack her skull open first!

There’s Something About Marty is book 3 in the award-winning Working Stiffs Mystery series.
While the books can be read out of order, starting with book 1 is recommended as some story threads run from book to book.
