If I do nothing else right this week I will still feel awesome because I bought the turkey for Thanksgiving. I stress every year about that silly bird. I remember a year when there was a shortage of turkeys and people were freaking out. I had already bought mine, so I was okay. I remember this happening. I think. I can’t actually remember if that happened or if I just imagined it in my head, but it drives me every year to make sure I get the turkey early, in case they run out. It must have happened. I am certain it happened with pumpkin pie filling. I usually don’t make pumpkin pie, I buy it. Maybe I should pick up pie filling just in case.

Love Hurts. For Derwena de Caro, songstress, female icon, teenage dream, success brought drugs, alcohol and a philandering boyfriend. It also brought wealth, fame and a stalker, or so she claimed. And that’s where I came in, to investigate the identity of the stalker, little realising that the trail would lead to murder and a scandal that would make the newspaper headlines for months on end.

Love Hurts. For me, Samantha Smith, Enquiry Agent, love arrived at the end of a fist. First, I had to contend with an alcoholic mother, who took her frustrations out on me throughout my childhood, then my husband, Dan, who regarded domestic violence as an integral part of marriage. But I survived. I obtained a divorce, kept my sense of humour and retained an air of optimism. I established my business and gained the respect of my peers. However, I was not prepared for Dan when he re-entered my life, or for the affection showered on me by Dr Alan Storey, a compassionate and rather handsome psychologist.

Sam’s Song. This is the story of a week that changed my life forever.

Sleeping in Trees: True Tales of Boyhood Adventure

2015 CAL AWARD FINALIST!
Get ready for a captivating collection of true tales that will transport you straight back to the 1960s and right into the colorful times, bold adventures and hilarious hijinks of a small crew of rambunctious boys navigating the rapidly changing landscape of South Florida. You will discover wild imaginations, wrestle with infestations, dodge nasty neighbors and endure but a dusting of parental supervision. Was there mayhem? You bet.

These are my stories, over fifty in all. You will be surprised, charmed, sometimes shocked, laugh out loud and perhaps shed a tear, but also discover what you did not know you knew little about. What does Charles Goodyear have to do with the slingshot? What is a Bufo marinus? Whatever happened to angel wings and sissy bars? Why is a Molotov cocktail not a bomb and just how does one sleep in trees?

There were ten of us. We all scattered following high school. I do not believe that a single one was permanently maimed, psychologically scarred or even arrested, though I cannot vouch for this with certainty. There were cuts, bruises and sprains aplenty, blood lost, a few yards of stitches and numerous splints, an occasional broken bone and several concussions. But all the perpetrators made it through the gauntlet alive. Sadly, the same cannot be said for a small legion of lizards, land crabs, mockingbirds, blue jays, snakes, mosquitoes, wasps, bees, giant stinging grasshoppers, walking sticks, poisonous caterpillars, slugs, snails, red ants and Bufo marinus. Read on. Enjoy the tales.
