The horrible scene was most pleasant. Ghosts floating, goblins lurking, and headstones tilting perfectly. My neighbor has already decorated for Halloween. I gotta admit it is a bit early, but I will say it put a smile on my face. I was instantly envisioning myself taking down all the boxes with my decorations. Hubby hates that chore with a passion. It always involves him on a ladder, in 150 degree heat, waiting for me to decide if I want this or that box, and not getting an answer until I remember exactly what was in that box. That takes about 5 minutes per box. ” Stick you hand in it and tell me what you find!” I always tell him. His response is always the same. “A bunch Of CRAP!” He gets pretty grumpy. I will give it a few more weeks. Give hubby a break for now.

“If zombies did start roaming the streets, CDC would conduct an investigation much like any other disease outbreak. CDC would provide technical assistance to cities, states, or international partners dealing with a zombie infestation. This assistance might include consultation, lab testing and analysis, patient management and care, tracking of contacts, and infection control (including isolation and quarantine). It’s likely that an investigation of this scenario would seek to accomplish several goals: determine the cause of the illness, the source of the infection/virus/toxin, learn how it is transmitted and how readily it is spread, how to break the cycle of transmission and thus prevent further cases, and how patients can best be treated. Not only would scientists be working to identify the cause and cure of the zombie outbreak, but CDC and other federal agencies would send medical teams and first responders to help those in affected areas.” – Passage from the CDC Public Health Blog, posted March 16th, 2011.
When I first read the CDC blog, I thought it was hilarious. Some intern that had a fascination with zombies who’d watched too many horror movies. In hindsight, I probably should have read a little more into it. If an organization like the CDC was even uttering the word “zombie”, perhaps there was a reason for it. We would find out too late as we went about our daily lives that far too few of us were even remotely prepared.
My name is Jim Anders. Prior to the outbreak I was a typical family man. I had a wife and two kids. There was nothing extraordinary about me whatsoever except my penchant for bad luck. Sometimes ordinary men find themselves thrust into extraordinary situations. The difference between a corpse and a real live breathing human being is equal parts luck, resiliency and perseverance.
Sometimes, I lay awake at night and think about everything that we’ve been through to get us to this point. The mistakes I’ve made and people we’ve lost haunt me. I owed it to my family and the entire human race to carry on even without the ones that we’ve lost.
Even now I can hear them shambling around in the darkness, unrelenting hunger on foot. They never stop. They never tire. They have no remorse or fear.
We know how this happened now. We know who is responsible. We have a plan.
Now it is their turn to run and hide because we will not stop. We cannot stop. We have hope and sometimes that is more important than luck, resiliency and perseverance.
When it started I had no idea how significant my role would be in our collective survival, we were just trying to survive like everyone else. Let me start at the beginning…

Mary Jane Hatcher- everyone calls her Mojo- is beat up bad. She’s in the ICU of Phoebe Putney, the largest hospital in South Georgia, barely able to talk. How Mojo goes from being that skinny little girl in Nolan, a small forgotten town along the Flint River, to the young woman now fighting for her life, is where this story begins and ends.

Mojo, her mama Delores and her Uncle Calvin Mullinax, like most folks in Nolan, have just tried to make the best of it. Of course, people aren’t always what they seem, and Phil Foster-the handsome, spoiled son of the richest man in the county-is no exception.

As the story of the Mullinax family unfolds, Mojo discovers a family’s legacy can be many things — a piece of earth, a familiar dwelling, a shared bond. And although she doesn’t know why she feels such a bond with Phil Foster, it is there all the same, family or not. And she likes to think we all have us a fresh start. Like her mama always said, the past is all just water under the bridge. Mojo, after going to hell and back, finally comes to understand what that means.
