Today is a bit bittersweet. We are going camping this weekend and for the first time we are not taking our old pup Jethro. I just don’t think he would be able to handle the trip. We would be doing a lot of swimming at a beach that is half a mile away, and it will be very hot. He collapsed on the last camping trip and I just don’t want to put him through that again. So he is going to stay at home in an air-conditioned house during the heat wave. We are taking little Junebug though. We just can’t see leaving a new puppy home for someone else to worry about potty training and all the other duties of having a puppy. Junebug was given the okay to camp by the vet, so it is yet another adventure for her. Of course she is micro-chipped, has a tag on her collar, and I was thinking of writing my name and number in sharpie across her back. She is so small I would have to write my name on one side and number on the other. Maybe I will get one of those hamster balls to put her in.

The Time Traders (The Time Traders Series)
by Andre Norton
4.2 Stars (489 Reviews)
Genre: Science Fiction | Classics | Action & Adventure

FREE for a limited time

The first novel in the classic series, in which wars are no longer fought on land, in the air, or on the sea — but throughout time and space itself…
The never-ending tension between Russia and the United States has been escalated by a stunning new variable: time travel. While the Americans can roughly utilize the technology, the Russians have learned the secret of space travel — and that makes the US vulnerable. What they need is someone expendable to send through time to obtain the same secret.

Ross Murdock doesn’t consider himself expendable. He’s just a smart guy who made some bad choices that led him to a life of crime. But when he’s given a choice between medical “rehabilitation” and joining the mysterious Operation Retrograde, he decides to go along with the military option and hope for a chance to get away.

And he is going to get away — farther away than he ever imagined…
The Time Traders is the first book in the Time Traders Series, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

The Legend of Devil’s Creek
by D. C. Alexander
4.1 Stars (1,008 Reviews)
Genre: Suspense | Mystery

FREE for a limited time

Caution: Story contains strong profanity and graphic violence.

When a mutilated corpse is found bound to a tree deep in the forest of remote Aubrey Island, Washington, residents learn that the murder mirrors, in every ritualistic detail, a series of revenge killings described in a century-old local ghost story. More abductions and killings soon follow.

Justin Riddley, recently transferred to the island’s small college, faces growing evidence that one of his new friends and fellow students may be the murderer. John Marshall, redemption-seeking captain of the local police force, leads the frantic murder investigation and struggles to figure out whether the killings are tied to the island’s dark and violent past. Tormented by tragic wartime memories, and more convinced with each day that it is humanity’s fate to destroy itself, Marshall races against both the murderer and the specter of his own mental breakdown.

As blood continues to spill, Riddley and Marshall wonder whether there may be a dark, universal force that drives evil deeds great and small, and whether the nature of one’s childhood might sometimes, in the end, be all that separates the saint from the psychopath.

Can I Be Frank? (Father Frank Book 1)
by Rob Wyatt
4.7 Stars (38 Reviews)
Genre: Humor & Satire

FREE for a limited time

This humorous novel follows a young, English, Catholic priest to his first parish in America. Father Francis discovers that occasional attendance at church youth clubs, years of study at a seminary, and a love of The Dukes of Hazzard television show, have done little to prepare him for his new life. Women appear to view his vow of chastity merely as a challenge, and Gene Charmois, local bigwig and bullyboy, simply wants to add Frank to his portfolio. Despite the advice of Father William, the wisecracking Vicar General (and sometimes because of it), Frank unwittingly makes an enemy of Gene Charmois. The young priest becomes the subject of disturbing, if unfounded rumours, and soon finds himself without income, a congregation, or the support of his diocese.

With the help of his parish administrator, an atheistic doctor, and a local judge-cum-secondhand car dealer, Frank uncovers distinctly dodgy, dangerous and illegal goings-on down on the farm — Gene Charmois’ farm. What starts out as a mission of mercy to rescue a group of exploited migrant workers, turns into a major government investigation.
