Tough Mudder: Sacramento Ca, Sat. June 10. 8:30am. We have all gathered in the starting shoot under the shade of the trees. It’s cool, but the sun is shining bright promising a beautiful day ahead. There are easily 50 of us standing shoulder to shoulder. The music is pumping loud. Some of us dance because of the music, others jump and bounce to warm up our bodies. We wait for the MC to come out and do his beginning of race speech. I have been here four times before. I know his speech and every time it feels new and personal. I’m sure it is the same speech he does for every wave in every city, but there is no doubt in my mind that he is talking directly to me. He believes what he says and no matter how many times he says it, it is truth and it moves me. We honor the soldiers and those who have fallen. We honor the First Responders. I try to not let it get to me, but it does. Every time. It’s hard not to be moved when we all put our hand over our heart and sing the Star Spangled Banner. Oh Say Can You  See… The song ends, we all exhale. We are not strangers anymore. The countdown begins… 3..2..1. We run….
