Yesterday was such a sweet sweet reminder of how delightful Spring is. The sun was out and the blue skies were filled with doves. I’m talking a lot of doves. They were all over my backyard. I have no clue where they have been this whole time, but they were lining the fence aggravating my sweet chickies. I’m not exactly sure why my chickies hate doves so much, but it was very clear that if one of those little guys landed in the yard there would be heck to pay. So the doves perched themselves all along the fence and cooed at my ladies. Summer was particularity diligent at keeping them off the grass, rushing at them with death in her eyes if they tried to land. I am so glad I am on Summer’s good side. She can look like a really mean chicken. I can only imagine what the doves see when she is coming at you. I made sure she got extra treats for all her hard work. She knows something about those doves. I won’t question it.

Louisiana Bigshot is the SECOND book in the Talba Wallis mystery series by Edgar Award-winning author Julie Smith

A POET, A BARONESS, A COMPUTER GENIUS, PLUS TWO DETECTIVES… AND THEY’RE ONLY TWO PEOPLE!

Meet the hottest detective duo in New Orleans–she’s Queen Latifah. He’s Danny DeVito. Or they would be if this were a movie–in print, they’re Talba Wallis and Eddie Valentino. Talba’s got the beauty, the brains, the computer savvy, the poetic soul, the youth, the right demographic, and the sass. Eddie’s got the detective agency. Also a short fuse and yes, wisdom. Not only do they make it work, they’ve got chemistry.

And they need every skill and ounce of courage they can summon in this intricate tale of a decades-old conspiracy only now coming home to roost, with the murder of Talba’s friend Babalu Maya. Babalu is actually Clayton Robineau, daughter of the local banker in a small Louisiana town that bears her name, a town buried under the weight of its own malevolent past.

Something terrible happened to Clayton as a child, but it was far from the usual “something terrible”. As Talba and Eddie investigate, they find it was an injury — both pscyhic and physical–so bizarre, so shameful and damning that almost anyone in town would kill to cover it up. Or so it seems to the New Orleans duo as they dodge bullets and what passes for the law in this malignant enclave, fetid with the rot of its corruption, yet determined to keep its sordid skeletons buried.

Never did Faulkner’s words ring so true as in Clayton, Louisiana: “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

Two names that didn’t belong to us. Two shoes that did.

She’s felt the stark pain of being left behind by the people who are supposed to love her the most; her parents. Raised by her caring uncle on an old plantation, Hawthorne lives her life on the fringes of her small Southern town.

Until she meets his shoe.

Senior year, last period English class, and a pair of silent tennis shoes resting next to hers in the back of the room throws Hawthorne into a world she’d learned to stay outside of.

His name is Max Vincent, but in her mind, he’s Heathcliff. The handsome eighteen-year-old boy behind the shoes will pull Hawthorne into a passionate and unforgettable adventure of self-discovery during a time when love seems impossible.

Shoes can tell a lot about a person. The journey they take you on can tell a lot about how they’ll hold up.

Stealing Second (The Amendments Book One 1)

Genre: Science Fiction

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

The freedom to defend oneself against all enemies, foreign and domestic, is the very definition of liberty. America’s Founding Fathers went to great lengths to ensure this right wasn’t infringed upon by future lawmakers. Still, to this day, politicians seem determined to undermine that freedom. Once that right is stripped away from the American People, freedom as we know it will cease to exist.

Stealing Second takes a look into future America, an unarmed America, where unmanned drones rule the skies and UN troops police the population. Across the country, detention camps spring up like weeds. Americans are given two weeks to turn in their firearms. But those who believe Americans will easily give up their arms have another thing coming. Washington only succeeds in angering the American People and the country plunges into a second revolutionary war. With the odds stacked heavily against them, Americans fight back to preserve their liberty.

Like many Americans, Gary Smith trusts the government to make his decisions for him. He lives in a world of self-imposed apathy, blissfully ignorant, and determined to remain so. Slowly, the blinders are removed from his eyes. Gary wakes up to find that the world he knows has suddenly changed. Too late, he realizes that he was part of the problem. Desperate to take back what has been stolen from him, Gary joins a group of likeminded individuals in a last-gasp effort to turn back the hands of time.

Powerfully written and uniquely entertaining, this timely tale is a story that begs to be read. However you feel about gun control, whatever side of the proverbial aisle you stand, Stealing Second is an important work of fiction. A plausible scenario that all Americans should consider before allowing our politicians to dismantle the Second Amendment.
