I find it very odd that you never see me at the beach during the summer, because I hate sand, wind, and cold. This winter, however, I have been spending a lot more time hanging out with the seagulls and seaweed. Today we are going to a dog beach to let my sister in law’s dog and my partner in crimes puppy run around and make a few friends. Of course I am bringing my old pup Jethro, but he is not one to socialize. He mostly likes to just hang close to me and smell the salty air. I worry that this trip might be a bit too much for his old bones, but I think it would be nice for him to go on a little adventure.

Behind the Forgotten Front: A WWII Novel
by Barbara Hawkins
4.3 Stars (49 Reviews)
Genre: Historical Fiction | History

FREE for a limited time

This forbidden story about lunacy at the top was exposed by one soldier’s diary. Picture India and Burma in 1942: with unexplored jungles, Himalayan Mountains, monsoon rains, Naga headhunters, and a young man looking for adventure. For fifty years he swore to keep secret the military’s ‘win at all cost’ mentality. This is not another ‘boy goes to war’ tale; instead it’s about Harry Flynn’s struggle with himself as he helped to build the ‘road to nowhere’ through Japanese-occupied Burma and eventually as a combatant in America’s first guerrilla-supported units, Merrill’s Marauders and later the Mars Task Force. Malaria, the smell of fear, loneliness and the enemy were overcome through the unbreakable bonds of friendship he made on the battle field and the undying love of his life back home. It’s not about heroes but about people; soldiers who may have been good men even if they weren’t brave. Everyone knows the outcome of WWII, where men walked away carrying unspeakable memories and ‘lives that could have been’ haunted those that lived. Behind the Forgotten Front brings them all back to life and shows that history is about facts driven by the passions and sometimes mistakes of real people.

Flightsuit

4.1 Stars (83 Reviews)
Genre: Science Fiction

FREE for a limited time

A wrecked alien flightsuit is discovered in the Appalachian Mountains, and the alien wants it back. Growing up poor in a virtual era isolates 14-year-old Leo. The others are immersed in a digital world he cannot access. He’s left to explore miles of wilderness bounded by the Nolichucky River and encircling Appalachian mountain ridges of Bumpas Cove, Tennessee. Beyond the last broken and tilted pieces of a crumbling asphalt road, he discovers the abandoned village where Iron Mountain’s mine workers lived. He walks inside empty houses and mine-works searching for toys and relics of the families that lived there decades before. In this place, being alone feels natural. He returns daily, looking for forgotten things. Crawling through a streambed under a tunnel of long blackberry briars, he finds something that isn’t covered with rust. It shines white in the scattered shadows. Freed of muck and mire, the glass-metal sleeve is as light as plastic. He slides his arm inside, but before his fingers can reach down into the two long flat fingers, a sharp hook locks into his arm. Leo is forced to find other scattered pieces, assembling a full flightsuit. Once restored, it prepares for a thousand light-year return trip with Leo trapped inside, as it waits for its alien pilot to be restored into Leo’s mind. But the suit has drawn others, long isolated and possessing dangerous powers. They all face an alien entity with no regard for their lives.

Alfie Vihar is about to graduate from high school, just started a new job, and is in WAY over his head. When he walked into Resources, Inc. three weeks before graduation, he was looking for a summer internship to learn about the business world to appease his parents. During his interview, Alfie accidently revealed that he wanted nothing to do with business, but instead of ending it right there, the CEO gave Alfie an address and a time, setting him on the path to becoming the newest member of Team 9 of Resources, Inc.’s Henchmen Division. Alfie is taught the ins and outs of being a henchman by his teammates: team leader and hacker Jeremiah Gibson, second in command and combat/spy expert Nikolai Maklakov, shooter and hitter Evelyn “Ray” Green, and scientist/thief/budding supervillian LeRoy Monte-Piere. Alfie is thrown headlong into situations he continually believes are beyond his capabilities and depends on his humor, stubbornness, and teammates to help him pull through. “First Shot” (originally released as “It Begins”) is the beginning of Alfie Vihar’s adventures with Team 9 and Resources, Inc.
