My poor pup was not liking the rain at all yesterday and he was going to stand his ground. He had decided that he was going to wait it out and be very uncomfortable rather than just go outside, go pee and get a little wet. Well I knew that rain was not letting up anytime soon, so I had to take him for a walk. I was a little bitter about the whole thing and I thought for sure I would be the only one foolish enough to walk their dog in such heavy wind and rain. Nope, not at all. In fact I was amazed at how many people were out walking their pups. All of them with the same squished up face I was wearing as well. The wind was so rough that I am sure I burned a few extra calories just fighting falling over. After that miserable experience, today he was much more agreeable to just get a little wet rather than go on a full blown swim again.

“Baron Ford,” he says and pauses to pick apart my expression, attempting to read how familiar I am with that name. I nod stiffly to give no indication I know exactly, who that is. I’m shocked to hear it in this setting, at this stage of my life, the one far away from Cambridge, Massachusetts over five years later.” Advertising Executive, Clarity Parker thought she would never see Baron Ford again. Five years ago, they shared a magical first date and then poof–he literally vanished into thin air. That’s why she’s stunned to hear his name again. After all, five years have passed since that night, and now, to add intrigue to insult, he’s requested that she be exclusively assigned to his multi-million dollar account. “Look Mum, a diary. Who was Lillian Loveday?” Megan asks, holding it out. “Your great grandmother: my granny. Read it to me.” For a moment, Louise is lost, wistful even. She was very close to Lillian, much closer than to Roberta and she wonders what she will recognise of the person she knew and loved so much. Roberta Flanders is ill in hospital and wants to spend what time she has left at home, so at the end of the summer term, Louise collects her daughter Megan from school and they drive to the old farmhouse in the country, which has been in the family for generations. Roberta’s life has not been easy and once back at home and in her own bed, ghosts from the past start to reveal their secrets, causing her to question some of her beliefs. Louise has her own ghosts to deal with. Her marriage is crumbling and she needs to re-evaluate her life. Her relationship with her mother is difficult, but she has a duty to care for her; especially now, at the end of her days. Also, she doesn’t want to miss this phase of her daughter’s life, for she is growing up all too quickly and soon will no longer be a child. One evening, Megan discovers a diary. It covers her great grandmother’s life from the 1930s to the 1950s and through it, she learns some of the family history and about love and loss in what was a turbulent period of the twentieth century. As Lillian shares her story, Louise and Megan come to realise just how much the past still affects the present, although as always, Roberta has her own point of view.
