I am digging my heals in and screaming and biting anyone who tries to tell me school starts in a few days. I know a lot of parents who are very much looking forward to sending their little sweeties back to school and have the champagne and oj at the ready, but not me. School opening means I have to start doing homework again. I HATE homework. Yes, I know my kids are supposed to do it, but they always ask for help, and their math is hecka hard. There is some new math out there right now and it is so confusing. You know it’s bad when the parents have to ask the teachers to explain it and there are tutorials online for the parents. I barley got through third grade math, I can only imagine what fourth is going to be like.

Nanyang
Ian Stewart
3.9 Stars (7 Reviews)
Genre: Historical Fiction

FREE for a limited time

Romance, adventure, drama, and history meld in the sweeping Asian saga Nanyang – now republished with a comprehensive guide to the book’s fictional characters and historical figures.

It is an epic tale spanning a period of 200 years during which corrupt colonialists and venal indigenous leaders vied with Chinese immigrants to exploit the region’s natural resources with little regard for the suffering of the rural poor. This was a time that saw the main European powers extend their rivalry from their immediate environs to India, South-East Asia and China, where there were strategic and economic prizes to be won. This story of love, tragedy, avarice and brutality begins in the mid seventeenth century, when Dutch soldiers and officials sent by ship from Batavia to acquire laborers for the Java settlement seize a young woman, Mei Ling, from a village in Fujian, China, along with scores of men. Seventeen-year-old Mei Ling is kidnapped at the behest of a lecherous Dutch official, who organizes a mutiny when the ship’s captain places her under his protection. Nanyang follows the adventures of Mei Ling and her brother, who sets out to rescue her, and their descendants amid land and sea battles of warring nations, natural disasters and rampant disease. They are caught up in historical events (in Europe as well as South-East Asia), in which notable English, Dutch and Javanese figures play their real-life roles. The story begins in China and ends soon after the founding of Singapore by Sir Stamford Raffles, who features in the book along with other personalities of the period, including Horatio Nelson and Captain James Cook.

Aphid in My Eye: Adventures in the Orchid Trade
Tom Powell
4.5 Stars (6 Reviews)
Genre: Humor & Entertainment | Crafts, Hobbies & Home

FREE for a limited time

This humorous book tells the tales of young Tom and Betty as they take on the world of fancy orchids in New York back in the day. Thomas Powell may be known to you as the distinguished, award winning editor and publisher of the monthly newsletter, The Avant Gardener, and the author of popular garden books. But, back in the nineteen fifties and sixties, he and his wife Betty were just starting out in horticulture when they were suddenly drawn headlong into the high flying world of the orchid trade, in the days before tissue culture and mechanized greenhouses made the world’s most beautiful flower available to all. The cast of orchid-obsessed characters in this book range from super rich, even titled customers to explorers, breeders, lecturers, judges, growers, and professional orchidists of all sorts. If you have ever been part of a special interest organization or a competitive flower show, you will laugh with recognition at these boisterous tales of the old days when newlywed New Yorkers Betty and Tom took on the world of orchid collection and showing with innocence and energy. You will enjoy Betsy West’s spirited illustrations, too. Tom, in this tribute to Betty, lays out the perils and pleasures of lecturing to snorers and poisoners, foiling pollen purloiners, corsaging buxom matrons for the horse show, and blanketing caskets with lovely orchids for gangster funerals. He takes you along for tours beset by beauties, bores and boars, the challenge of keeping a behemoth boiler going to save the orchids from bitter cold, a wild escape from a wife swapper, and the ultimate heaven/hell experience managing thousands of raging and rabid orchid exhibitors at the “greatest flower show of all time.” This is a story of the heights of Mother Nature and the ways of human nature. Aphid in My Eye is a total treat for anyone who has ever admired, seen, or attempted to grow an orchid.
