I am not sure if I win mom of the year or evil mom of the year. My oldest came  to me crying that he was worried about his family dying. First thing out of my mouth is, “Well, that’s what you get when you watch natural disaster action movies” He said he felt bad for the hundreds of people who died in the film. I corrected him and said the number was more like seven million people. He wasn’t to thrilled with me at that point. I had warned him that the movie would be too much for him, but he swore he could handle it. Luckily it wasn’t a gruesome movie, just lots of action. There weren’t even any dead bodies laying around, so it was pretty mild. After I made my point that he should have just listened to me, I gave him a hug and assured him that it was all fake. He felt better..ish.

Bay Winchester is having a tough week. As the local editor of Hemlock Cove’s only newspaper, she just happens to be present when a body is found in an area corn maze. To make matters worse, the police believe the murder may have something to do with the occult. This wouldn’t be a problem for a normal reporter, but since Bay is descended from a well-known line of actual witches, the town is understandably on edge. Between the suspicious townspeople, the befuddled police presence and that random hot biker guy that may or may not have something to do with the murder — Bay has her hands full. When you add the typical family problems, multiplying ghosts — and one monster of a zit that she’s sure came from her aunt’s curse — Bay is just struggling to make it through the week. Of course, when the killer sets his sights on Bay, things could get a whole lot worse.

Note: These books are full of sarcasm and are a little bit snarky — so read only if you like to laugh and you aren’t easily offended. This is the first book in the Wicked Witches of the Midwest mystery series.

Caste Away: Growing Up in India’s “Most Backward” Caste
Hill Krishnan
4.9 Stars (25 Reviews)
Genre: History | Biographies & Memoirs

FREE for a limited time

#1 Amazon Best Seller “Growing Up in India’s ‘Most Backward’ Caste” is a coming of age story told through the eyes of a “Most Backward” boy growing up in Tamil Nadu, India. Its pages are ripe with shame, honor, and survival-based decisions, such as a father killing his own daughter to preserve the family’s reputation, a grandfather thieving a goat to feed his family and burying its bones in the night, and women employing natural poisons to kill their female infants in order to avoid the devastating costs of dowry. Perhaps it is also a story of how to survive as a “Most Backward” boy in a society that values light skin more than education, designated by British colonizers as “habitually criminal,” where ancient caste rivalries persist even into an era of rapidly unfolding modernity. Is it possible, one wonders, for a boy to leave his caste identity behind and adopt new ways of seeing himself, shattering hundreds of years of prejudice? “Growing Up in India’s ‘Most Backward’ Caste” illustrates the potential for faith, effort, and vision to overcome even the cruelest of abuses and biases. Its author, Dr. Hill Krishnan, later took on multiple identities disallowed by his roots: engineer, movie actor and performer, political scientist, professor, candidate for public office in the United States, motivational speaker, and now, as an author telling his story. In “Growing Up in India’s ‘Most Backward’ Caste,” one observes the earliest, most pivotal moments in which he first defies oppression. “Growing Up in India’s ‘Most Backward’ Caste” is truly eye-opening — a brave, intimate portrayal of life as a “Most Backward” child resisting all categorization, inspiring the rest of us to challenge our own perceived limitations.
