My little bassets know the sound of a Lego package being opened, and that is unfortunate for me. Yesterday, while the kids were playing oh so loudly in their rooms, I decided it would be a great time to relax and put together a Lego set I had been saving for quite some time. The VW Camper Bus. It is crazy cute and it brings back wonderful memories I have as a child camping with my family along the North Coast of California. I set myself up with a fresh cup of coffee, comfy sweatpants and plenty of light. I grabbed the first package of pieces and like a can opener to a cat the crackle of the plastic called my babies to me. My plan for a relaxing Lego build soon turned into a hefty round of “Don’t Touch That!” and “Stop it! It’s Mine!” The disapproving look from my hubby telling me I need to share was just the icing on the cake. But this mamma wasn’t born yesterday. I announced that it was video game time and the room cleared in 2.2 seconds. Peace at last.

Another Broken Wizard

3.7 Stars (98 Reviews)
Genre: Literary Fiction

FREE for a limited time

Jim Monaghan really didn’t want to go back to Worcester, when sudden unemployment and his father’s surgery forced his hand. Drifting into a dubious ICU romance while he tends to his father, Jim seeks out his childhood best friend, Joe Rousseau, who has problems of his own. Joe’s in a feud with a local gang, and his plan to resolve the matter only makes things worse. Nonetheless, Jim follows his friend into Worcester nights defined by drugs and violence. As the danger escalates, he makes a painful choice to try to save Joe. And then he has to live with the consequences.

A book about the threshold of childhood and adulthood, about straddling the expectations of a fading industrial home and the attenuated promise of an information economy, about reconciling the love for a friend with self preservation, Another Broken Wizard is, above all, a portrait of Worcester, Massachusetts. “… exceptionally vivid characters, a story which sneaks up on you at first, then gathers pace, and the book has tight writing which keeps you turning the pages right until the profoundly moving denouement. Simply put, Another Broken Wizard is brilliant.

Bob Deaton takes a whimsical look back at the hazards of growing up clueless in Indiana in the 1950s. It is a gonzo take on a time and place in which vomiting in a grade school cafeteria is a political act, prom dresses are impenetrable fortresses of taffeta and rebar, and a cigar-smoking dentist favors conspiracy theories but not anesthesia. Zealous summer camp chaplains routinely recruit Manchurian Candidates for Jesus, but basketball reigned supreme as the real state religion. Even churches field teams, but at their own peril, for a defeat on the court could have serious theological consequences: “St. Mary’s 55 / First Methodist 49, Meatless Fridays Commence for Methodists on March 1”

Genre: Children’s eBooks

FREE for a limited time

Have you ever read a Dr. Seuss book and wondered, “How’d he think THAT up?” The Day I Met Dr. Seuss tells the rhyming tale of Annie G. Magee, a young girl who wants to meet Dr. Seuss and find out what makes him so unique. Not content to simply write to Dr. Seuss, Annie travels to his house, summons her courage and knocks upon the door. Dr. Seuss is not at home, but Annie isn’t ready to give up yet! Discover the length of Annie’s curiousity and determination and whether she meets with success.

While the events in the story never occurred, they could have. The facts about Theodor Seuss Geisel are historically accurate and highlighted in the book’s postscript. This story was one of the first Anne Emerick ever wrote and in 1990 she sent a copy to Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) to be sure the story would not offend him in any way. He replied that it did not. The Day I Met Dr. Seuss includes an author’s note with the story behind the book’s publication, a tale that should encourage any unpublished author with a string of rejection letters.
