I shouldn’t have looked too closely. Right now I am obsessed with the Hallmark Original Christmas movies. For some reason I just can’t get enough of them and I watch them every chance I get. One problem. The snow is just so fake in every scene. Of course it is! It was most likely filmed in the summer. Why would this bother me? Why can’t I stop looking at it? I can suspend disbelief and accept that Santa’s daughter need to save Christmas in a tiny town who has lost their way, but I just can’t get past the fake snow.

SEPARATE LIVES: THE STORY OF MARY RIPPON
Silvia Pettem
4.4 Stars (27 Reviews)
Genre: History | Biographies & Memoirs

FREE for a limited time

As a pioneer woman educator at the University of Colorado, in Boulder, Mary Rippon received wide acclaim for her teaching, but, in order to keep her job, she hid her husband and child behind a Victorian curtain of secrecy. Now, for the first time, “Separate Lives: The Story of Mary Rippon” reveals the conflicts between this extraordinary woman’s public and private lives. The following true story follows Mary from the small midwestern farm where she was born to the great centers of culture in Europe. In January of 1878, after years of education in Germany, France, and Switzerland, the soft-spoken twenty-seven-year-old woman was welcomed at the newly opened University of Colorado in the small frontier town of Boulder. The growth of her lengthy career paralleled the growth of the university where she worked her way up from the first female faculty member to the university’s first female professor, eventually chairing the department of German language and literature. Modest and unassuming, “Miss Rippon” taught in the male-dominated world of nineteenth century academia where she shielded her womanly emotions from the public eye. She was a professional woman and a mother in an era when these two roles could not be combined. Hidden romance and familial responsibilities spanned two continents, and in an age of meager salaries and lengthy sea voyages, she managed to travel to Europe and back eight times. This biography does not tarnish “Miss Rippon’s” well-deserved reputation but uncovers the human side of a woman whose circumstances clashed with the mores of her times.
