I have been seeing a lot of my friends on Facebook posting about their Christmas trees and decorations, but I just can’t quite let go of Thanksgiving and the cute Fall decorations just yet. I know as soon as the Turkey is done you need to hit the ground running and jump right into Christmas or you will be left in the dust, but no. I am on the ground, clinging to that turkey’s leg screaming “DON’T LEAVE!!!” The poor turkey is a bit confused because he originally thought I was going to eat him, but soon realized I was just nuts.

When Val Valentyn suggests that someone should put her nasty boss out of his misery, she is only joking. But when Val stumbles into her bedroom and finds Mr. Potter, his blood soaking into her brand new 400-thread-count sheets, it seems she has been taken literally. Val knows that regardless of a couple minor, not even worth mentioning incidents, where she was a teensy bit violent after one too many drinks, there is no way she killed her cheap, petty, world-class halitosis suffering boss. May he rest in peace. The problem is, the police are convinced it was she who stabbed Mr. Potter. Someone has to find the real killer and it looks like it will have to be Val. But she’s not alone. Her best friend Julie and her seventy-four year old neighbour Rose, are along for the ride. While their sleuthing skills may be negligible, Val is convinced that determination and a positive attitude will lead them to the killer. And while she isn’t personally blessed with either of these qualities, she is plenty desperate, and doesn’t inspiration come from desperation? Or something like that. Inspiration comes from something. Coming Unclued is Book One in the humorous Val Valentyn series.

Walking Distance: Pilgrimage, Parenthood, Grief, and Home Repairs
David Hlavsa
5.0 Stars (17 Reviews)
Genre: Politics & Social Sciences | Health, Fitness & Dieting | Biographies & Memoirs

FREE for a limited time

In the summer of 2000, David Hlavsa and his wife Lisa Holtby embarked on a pilgrimage. After trying for three years to conceive a child and suffering through the monthly cycle of hope and disappointment, they decided to walk the Camino de Santiago, a joint enterprise — and an act of faith — they hoped would strengthen their marriage and prepare them for parenthood. Though walking more than 400 miles across the north of Spain turned out to be more difficult than they had anticipated, after a series of misadventures, including a brief stay in a Spanish hospital, they arrived in Santiago. Shortly after their return to Seattle, Lisa became pregnant, and the hardships of the Camino were no comparison to what followed: the stillbirth of their first son and Lisa’s harrowing second pregnancy. Walking Distance is a moving and disarmingly funny book, a good story with a happy ending — the safe arrival of David and Lisa’s second son, Benjamin. David and Lisa get more than they bargained for, but they also get exactly what they wanted: a child, a solid marriage, and a richer life.
