The new chicken coop looks beautiful. I love it! BUT…oh dear, here it comes. When you tear out an old coop and put in a new one, things get messy. Whoa! My yard looks like a tornado came along and ripped everything out and threw it all in the exact opposite location from where it began. The cleanup on this one is going to be crazy. I also noticed that something tried to get in the new coop last night, so some reinforcements need to be made. I am happy to report that the ladies have all found the new feeder. I am not sure about the new watering system, but I will be removing the old container, so if they haven’t had a drink in a while they will pay more attention when I point it out. For some reason I was not anticipating all of this chaos, but chaos is what I got.

The day has arrived when Alice can no longer live on her own. She forgets to take her meds, and she was caught feeding teabags to her cat. Her long suffering daughter delivers her to a retirement home, but getting her to stay will be a battle of wills. Alice is met by Melanie, the head nurse on the west wing. She smiles with her mouth but not with her eyes. While Karen and Melanie go to finish the paperwork, Alice meets a couple of the residents, as well as Lily, a surly 15 year old who has been sent by a judge to complete community hours for shoplifting. Will any of them persuade Alice to stay?

This story does not intend to make light of elderly people who are forced to leave their homes to live in retirement facilities. This story is about resilience and strength of character. Alice uses her sharp wit as she attempts to accept her fate and make the best of her new situation.

The breeze followed them inside until the automatic doors whooshed shut behind them. Corridors like hungry mouths headed in every direction. Alice chewed on her bottom lip and planted her feet. She gulped. “This place is going to swallow me whole,” she whispered. Karen blew on her hands and smiled. “Oh good, it’s much warmer inside. Well, this is lovely isn’t it?” “These cream walls are going to put me to sleep. Permanently. Is that what you want?” Alice wanted to have a tantrum on the floor, kick and scream like a toddler. But the floor looked uncomfortable and getting down there was just too hard.
