I know this will be a very unpopular thing to say, but the holidays are coming up fast. I should say, the holidays are coming up fast for people who like to make gifts for friends and family. I really liked the gift I made for some of my family members last year (a board game made of wood and played with marbles) and I feel it would really be hard to top that one. Well… for any others of you who like homemade gift ideas I will keep an eye out for those kindle books and add them to the posts.

Some people intentionally mislead others about their ethnicity. Marie did it unknowingly. Twenty-four-year-old Marie Marchetti has just experienced a life-altering revelation — the identity of her real father. As she packs for her first visit with him and his family, she wonders how her life is about to change, how they will receive her, and what she will learn about her own identity. A lot happens as a result of Marie’s Thanksgiving visit, and in her search for peace and truth in her life, she quickly learns that disparate lives can converge and interact in profound and surprising ways. But ironically the most consequential outcome of her visit unexpectedly grows out of an encounter with a twelve-year-old girl named Rachael.

Mind Game (A Blanco County Short Story)
Ben Rehder
4.6 Stars (27 Reviews)
Genre: Short Stories | Mystery, Thriller & Suspense

FREE for a limited time

Note from author: This is a short story. Very short, as in about 2,500 words. It was originally published several years ago in Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, and I’m proud of it, but let me repeat that it is a short story. I’ve seen Amazon reviewers purchase short stories, then give a poor review because they didn’t expect it to be a short story. So please consider this due notice — this is a short story! (My thanks to artist Tim Foley for the usage of his illustration within the ebook file.)

The sheriff of Blanco County has a problem on his hands. One local resident is making vague threats — hypothetically speaking, of course — to unsettle another local resident, who stole the first man’s girlfriend. The problem escalates and violence is almost certain, until the sheriff comes up with a brilliant and ironic solution.

Edgar Award-nominated author Ben Rehder’s Blanco County comic mysteries have made best-of-the-year lists in Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, and Field & Stream. The complete Rehder bibliography includes: Buck Fever Bone Dry Flat Crazy Guilt Trip Gun Shy Holy Moly The Chicken Hanger The Driving Lesson Gone The Next Hog Heaven

The Other Side of the Fence
Julie Dewey
4.8 Stars (23 Reviews)
Genre: Historical Fiction

FREE for a limited time

The Other Side of the Fence is a powerful, emotional journey illuminating the suffering caused by leprosy. This story begins and ends in Carville, Louisiana where in 1894, the town was transformed from an abandoned Plantation into a refuge for lepers. Children were forcibly isolated from their families and put under strict quarantine inside the confines of a twelve foot barbed wire fence. Once inside, they were stripped of their rights, their dignity, and often even their identity. Eighteen year old Frances was smack in the middle of the debutante ball season in Baton Rouge, when pale patches of skin were discovered on her arm during a dress fitting. Diagnosed with leprosy, she was seen as a blight on her family and was sent away at once. Restless and overwhelmed by her family’s abandonment, she set out on a journey through the confines of the plantation that led her to the bend in the Mississippi River. Here she discovers a hole dug under the fence; this is her chance to escape and reclaim her life, or start a new one. When Jenny, a spirited ten year old girl, and her four year old brother, Danny test positive for leprosy they also become reluctant residents of Carville. They are met with the open and compassionate arms of the Sisters of Charity who do their best to help them live normal lives among the suffering.

This sweeping historical novel gracefully details the depth, strength, and stamina of the human spirit during extreme times. When lives unfold and intertwine, Faith and Jenny find one another. Together, they develop a deep affinity and unlock the key to surviving by opening their hearts and letting love in once again. This is a love story about the deep bonds of friendship, the effects of love, and the ability to overcome and thrive.
