I know Friday the 13th is considered a bad day, but lets face it, it’s still a Friday and that can’t be all bad. Now Monday the 13th is horrible on so many levels. That should be a thing, not Friday. I am not a superstitious person, but I didn’t want to bring this up yesterday just in case. Now what can be worse than a Monday the 13th? How about April 15th? I gotta say that this week is just not a good one for anyone. It would be best if you all just stay in your pajamas and sit tight on the couch. We will get through this, but it’s best to do as little as possible. Consider this your note to get out of gym class.

Genre: Short Stories | Mystery, Thriller & Suspense

FREE for a limited time

JA Konrath, known for the Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels thrillers set in Chicago, offers this collection of short stories and novellas from the Jack Daniels universe.

Join Jack Daniels, her partner Herb Benedict, private eye Harry McGlade, and part-time criminal Phineas Troutt, in this omnibus of 15 stories. These were previous published in magazines and anthologies, and many are long out of print.

On the Rocks – Suicide or murder? Lt. Jack Daniels solves a locked room mystery.

Whelp Wanted – P.I. Harry McGlade becomes a dognapper in order to stop a dognapper, or something like that.

Street Music – Phineas Troutt hunts a prostitute through the dangerous streets of Chicago. Are his intentions pure?

The One That Got Away – The Gingerbread Man (the villain from WHISKEY SOUR) hunts one final victim.

With a Twist – It looked like the man fell from a great height, but the body is in his living room. Jack Daniels solves another impossible crime.

Epitaph – Phin Troutt takes on a Chicago street gang with vengeance on his mind.

Taken to the Cleaners – Harry McGlade tries to solve a difficult mystery, but mostly just goofs off.

Body Shots – Jack Daniels faces her most challenging case yet; a school shooting. But does she know more about the perp than she realizes?

Suffer – Phineas Troutt has taken some questionable jobs, but will he murder a man’s wife?

School Daze – P.I. Harry McGlade investigates a private school, but he’s not entirely sure why.

Overproof – While shopping on the Gold Coast, Jack Daniels notices traffic has come to a stand-still. When she realizes what the problem is, she’s confronted with her own mortality, and the possible deaths of hundreds.

Bereavement – How badly does Phineas Troutt need a fix? What is he willing to do?

Pot Shot – Detective Herb Benedict just wants a home cooked meal. But his plans get interrupted by a very determined sniper.

Last Request – Phineas Troutt picks up a hitchhiker, with deadly results.

The Necro File – Harry McGlade investigates some bizarre murders in this hilarious, gore-filled mini-epic. (Author’s note: This is easily the funniest thing I’ve ever written, but it’s also very offensive. Let the reader beware… )

That’s about 65,000 words of Jack Daniels and friends. Also included in this collection are excerpts from some of Jack’s other adventures, including:

An excerpt from Truck Stop by J.A. Konrath and Jack Kilborn, where Jack finds herself dueling with two serial killers at once.

An excerpt from Floaters by J.A. Konrath and Henry Perez, where Jack joins forces with Chicago reporter Alex Chapa to solve a bizarre disappearance.

An excerpt from Planter’s Punch by J.A. Konrath and Tom Schreck, where Jack travels to NY and befriends professional boxer Duffy Dombrowski to break an extortion ring.

And excerpt from Suckers by J.A. Konrath and Jeff Strand, where Harry McGlade reluctantly teams up with Andrew Mayhem. Hilarity ensues.

Bread or Death: Memories of My Childhood During and After the Holocaust
Milton Mendel Kleinberg
5.0 Stars (25 Reviews)
Genre: Biographies & Memoirs | History

FREE for a limited time

The war brought about scarcities of just about everything… except misery.

“Alle raise,” (everybody out), the German soldiers screamed as they pounded on our door with the butts of their rifles. And thus began a 4,500-mile journey from Poland through Russia and Siberia and eventually to Uzbekistan in Central Asia, as the author’s family used bribery and darkness of night to flee as the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939.

Young Mendel, from age four to fourteen, tells in vivid detail the wretched journey in cramped cattle cars through frigid Russia, the indignities of being forced labor, the shame of begging for bread just to survive, and death of those closest to him. The family s plight includes abandonment, hunger, and separation (and later remarkable twists of fate and reunion) quite unlike other Holocaust stories.

This coming-of-age, Holocaust memoir is the author’s personal account of how through great sacrifices by his mother he managed to survive the worst atrocities in human history and his uncertain days in a Polish Children’s Home, scrabbling for fallen fruit, and surviving kidnapping and murder on the Black Road, and return to German Displaced Persons camps at war’s end. But to what fate?

Originally written as a memoir just for his grandchildren, Milton Kleinberg gives a moving account of his family s hardships and eventual immigration with a lump-in-the-throat passage to America past the Statue of Liberty and into a land of opportunity tinged with bigotry yet with a promise to future generations.

This book for young adults has been reviewed by the Institute for Holocaust Education and includes a glossary, a book club discussion guide, a timeline, and a Teacher’s Guide.

Genre: Mystery, Thriller & Suspense

FREE for a limited time

In Child of Silence, the first award-winning Bo Bradley Mystery, a wise old Paiute woman finds a four-year-old boy tied to a mattress in an abandoned shack in the hills above San Diego. Child abuse investigator Bo Bradley gets the case. Staff at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children assume the boy is mentally impaired because he cannot talk, but Bo remembers a little sister named Laurie. She knows that the boy, like Laurie, is deaf.

Complicating things is Bo’s manic depressive disorder, a troubling but occasionally valuable problem for which she always, well sometimes, takes her meds. The prime directive in Bo’s job is “Don’t become emotionally involved with the child!”But the little boy is so bright inside his silence, and so alone. Bo feels the ominous first ripples of an oncoming manic episode and grabs her meds, but they won’t have much effect forweeks and the child is in danger now!

Risking her job and ultimately her life in a perhaps-delusional race to protect a four-year-old whose only word is his own name – “Weppo” – Bo finds herself alone with the child in a desert night fraught with terrors as she tries to reach an imagined safety among the Paiute. But political intrigue, desperate secrets and a relentless evil lurk in every shadow of a moonlit landscape in which Bo has only her own intense and uncanny perceptions as guide. She knows she’s “crazy,” but sometimes crazy sees what rational cannot. And “crazy” is now Weppo’s only chance for a life!
