I lost my little Fitbit (a bracelet that monitors/judges you how much you walk and exercise each day) over a week ago, and I haven’t exercised since. For some crazy reason I felt that if I wasn’t being monitored or credited I wasn’t really gonna try. I drank less water, ate more cookies, and I went on just one hike. I was free to be me (slowly twirling in a field of wild flowers, but only two or three times before I sitting down again and eating a cookie) and I took full advantage of it. Well last night, while putting a few of my son’s Legos away, I found it next to a X-Wing fighter. I put it on and today I will jog. Vacation over.

It’s always important to kill the right person. That’s a lesson Jesús Garza and Christian Keitel learn the hard way. Innovative and strangely likable (albeit with a bent for the macabre), the two assassins were just following orders when they eliminated a pesky reporter threatening corporate secrets. Unfortunately for them — and their billionaire boss — the reporter had a secret of his own. The killers have set off a chain reaction of revenge that threatens a financial empire built on murder, sex, fraud and political corruption.

Enter Jake Scarne, a rogue New York City cop turned private eye sent to Florida by a grieving father to uncover the truth about his son’s death. Bodies pile up from coast to coast as Scarne finds himself in the crosshairs of a powerful media baron, vicious mobsters, various homicide cops, the F.B.I. – and a beautiful, amoral woman that men hate to love, but do.

Jake Scarne is a hero in the tradition of Robert Parker’s Spenser, tougher than nails and as quick with a quip as he is with a gun. With friends on both sides of the law, he’ll cut any corner when seeking the truth.

In the middle of the Atlantic, four hundred miles west of Bermuda, the eight thousand passengers and crew aboard the cruise ship MS Cypress vanish into thin air. Everyone—men, women, and children—all gone. Taken.

Everyone except five teenagers.

In an instant, their seven day cruise becomes a nightmare: eighteen decks of haunted hallways, pools and bars completely empty, desserts still half-eaten in the abandoned Royal Promenade. A ghost ship the size of a city, sailing blind. At least their annoying parents are gone.

But now strange things are happening. Satellites are dropping out of orbit, falling from the sky. Satellites…and bigger things. They’re not as alone as they think. A message appears in an ancient language, burned into the carpet in the deck ten elevator lobby. It’s a warning. A monster lurks onboard, hunting them. What they’ve long suspected appears certain: the vanishing…it was an attack.

Now the most unlikely of friends must confront the shadowy pasts that link them and regain control of a runaway cruise ship, crack a four-thousand-year-old mystery, and wage war on a formless evil…before they too vanish into oblivion.
