Hubby Basset got me a Fitbit for Christmas. Now instead of joining a gym and feeling bad about not going, I can feel bad in the comfort of my own home. If I just don’t look at my phone I will not know how lazy I am, but I can’t… I look…constantly. Hoping that somehow I have magically walked 5 miles without me knowing it. It is the same logic I use when I look in the refrigerator every 10 minutes hoping something new popped up. I might just log 5 miles just going back and forth from the refrigerator. Magic!!

With the blood of the dead and wounded freshly washed from her hands, and with her nurse’s uniform neatly packed away, she headed home…or to what she remembered as home. But the comfort of years past was not to be, and she was drawn away, back along her homeward trek, retracing her steps until she arrived once more at the train station where a heartbreaking reunion had seared itself into her memory. There, on the high plains of Nebraska, she stepped off and planted herself anew, and the welcome that she found was as rich as the soil beneath her feet. So she stayed, and she served, and as time allowed she wrote what she saw and heard, in stories from the Plains.

“You remind me of my dead boyfriend”

Definitely not your typical dating story. This hysterical book is a rough around the edges comedy about the true stories of one guy’s extremely unusual dating life and his missteps of finding a happy ending. Like the time when a woman admitted to him on their first date what her favorite illegal vices were– when he was working as a cop. Or the time he went on a date with a racist (just look at his last name). To the story of losing his virginity which involved a Philly cheesesteak, two states, the F.B.I. and the happiest place on earth. Real stories that are unique, raunchy and heartfelt that don’t always end on a high note but all lead up to a happy ending that you wouldn’t expect.

While having a late meal in an all-night diner one rainy evening, Jimmy Barlow looks out the window and sees a man being chased by two guys who look like they’re intent on doing him some serious harm. Then Jimmy sees the man toss an attache case into a dumpster before disappearing down an alley.

Does Jimmy do the smart thing and report what he’s seen to the police?

Nope. He does the other thing and digs the case out of the dumpster, takes off for home, and learns later that the case contains six hundred thousand dollars in one hundred dollar bills.

He’s elated of course, but he’s also smart enough to know he has to hide the money and pretend nothing has happened for as long as it takes for things to die down. To his dismay, Jimmy soon learns the man he saw outside the diner has been found murdered. Not only that, he was tortured.

Then Jimmy’s two best friends turn up dead while on holiday in Las Vegas. And they were tortured too. And now somebody is following him.

Jimmy Barlow is… a worried man.
