Wouldn’t you think that with all the super powers, magic, gizmos, gadgets, alien technology, and super geniuses roaming around, someone would have thought to create an Epi-Pen for Superman’s allergy to Kyptonite? I have that same reaction to peanuts, so I just got myself a pen. Sometimes I get exposed to the mean little nut and I need the pen. I don’t fall to my knees and squirm around on the floor in my pajamas and let it happen. Get a pen Superman. You got some smart friends. Make it happen. Geez.

Nicole Bessam had finally found him. After long, fruitless years of searching, after countless missteps and mistakes, she had at last reunited with the man she had pledged her heart to. He was right there in front of her.

But he didn’t remember her face.

Commander Jon Paxton was transfixed by the woman before him. He’d had lovers in the past, certainly – women who eased his loneliness. But none had ever called to him the way Nicole did. None had ever fit into his life as neatly as a key fits into its lock. And there seemed to be so much more beneath the surface – but he just couldn’t reach it.

Nicole had to move as carefully as a cat negotiating a rocky ledge high above a desolate abyss. One reckless step, one shift in the wrong direction, and the love they had shared could be forever lost.

Aquarian Awakenings is the first of four novellas in the Collective Saga series. This adventure romance is set in a sci-fi fantasy future, one where countless disparate races coexist in a tenuous truce. Only the strength of the Collective military keeps the peace and guards against invaders. These stories are presented in a gentle manner, with no explicit violence or intimacy.

Far from the Madding Crowd
Thomas Hardy
4.4 Stars (184 Reviews)
Genre: Classics | Literary Fiction

FREE for a limited time

Thomas Hardy’s classic tale of a woman brave enough to defy convention.

Spirited, impulsive, and beautiful, Bathsheba Everdene arrives in Wessex to live with her aunt. She strikes up a friendship with a neighbor, Gabriel Oak, and even saves the young shepherd’s life. But when he responds by asking for her hand in marriage, she refuses. She cannot sacrifice her independence for a man she does not love.

Years later, misfortune has bankrupted Gabriel, while Bathsheba has inherited her uncle’s estate and is now a wealthy woman. She hires Gabriel as a shepherd but is interested in William Boldwood, a prosperous farmer whose reticence inspires her to playfully send him a valentine. William, like Gabriel before him, quickly falls in love with Bathsheba and proposes. But it is the dashing Sergeant Francis Troy who finally wins her heart. Despite the warnings of her first two suitors, Bathsheba accepts his proposal—a decision that brings long-buried secrets to the fore and leaves everything for which she has fought so hard hanging in the balance.

Published a century and a half ago, Far from the Madding Crowd was Thomas Hardy’s first major success and introduced the themes he would continue to explore for the rest of his life. A love story wrapped in the cloak of tragedy, it is widely considered to be one of the finest novels of the nineteenth century.

Look at My Happy Rainbow: My Journey as a Male Kindergarten Teacher
Matthew Halpern
4.9 Stars (41 Reviews)
Genre: Education & Teaching | Professional & Technical

FREE for a limited time

What would a kindergartner write about me? Probably something like: Mr. Halpern is funny. He is handsome. He likes to laugh. I love Mr. Halpern. How can I top that? Who doesn’t want to be funny, handsome, laugh all the time, and be loved by their students? What they don’t know is I left a dreary cubicle job for the exciting, never boring life of a kindergarten teacher eight years ago and never looked back. I have seen and heard some crazy, hilarious, and even touching moments. Look at My Happy Rainbow is my account of the first few years working in a kindergarten classroom experiencing the day to day trials and tribulations and trying to see the world a little more through the eyes of a five-year-old. From the first time a child reached up to take my hand to learning the true value of zipping a coat, being a ‘rooster in a world of hens’ my unique perspective on teaching and children will (hopefully) warm your heart, make you laugh, and might even help you remember what it felt like to be in kindergarten.

Warning: I have a very short attention span (this is why I’m so well suited to teach kindergarten). Some of the chapters are short. One is less than one page. I think this makes the book ‘charming’, but please know – this is not War and Peace.
