I love cake. It’s just that simple. Cake is by far my most favorite food and I could (and sometimes do) eat it every day. I complain that I can’t avoid it because I have two school aged boys that get invited to many birthday parties, but I (not so secretly) enjoy it. I have a horrible fear of clowns. When I see a clown, the blood drains out of my face and I feel an overwhelming urge to run far far away. With these two facts about me in mind, you can only imagine how messed up I feel when I see the clown ice cream cakes in the freezer of my local ice cream parlor. I always forget about that display during the winter, but the heat is rising and the kids want ice cream. Time for frozen yogurt.

If heirloom seeds are shattered before planting, they will never grow. In the 20th Century mainstream accessible fiction, SHATTERED SEEDS: “SOFIA’S STORY”, CLU Gallagher does not write about the garden variety of seeds. Rather, she draws a unique comparison to the “seeds” of humanity as they are destroyed by war.

Sofia is a German woman of the 20th Century, whose life had been destroyed by war. When the novel opens, it is 2008, Sofia is now known as SOFIE SIMON, a wealthy author and entrepreneur who had founded the largest chain of adoption centers in the world. She is eighty-nine years old, facing death, and trying to put her affairs in order. She worries about what to do with the one item in her vast estate she values most, an heirloom quilt belonging to her German grandmother . . . until she meets Janene McDeenon, a writer/editor, once a Vietnamese orphan adopted by a loving American couple.Janene is searching for her biological parents, an African American soldier and a Vietnamese woman.

The story opens with Janene McDeenon traveling to Pittsburgh for a meeting with Sofia after she had found information about her search on one of the internet sites of Sofia’s centers. During the meeting, Sofia shares her life story with Janene, a tragic account of family, love, patriotism, and triumph of the human spirit. The two women form a bond that transcends time and distance, as Sofia finds closure to her life and Janene finds a new beginning for hers.

Henry, is a humorous exploration of the life of a nearly eighty year-old man with little left to live for.

A very cynical Henry bides his time, doing what he pleases, knowing that there are no consequences to be imposed by a world that ignores and dismisses him as it moves on.

Two years after the passing of his wife, Henry gradually faces the realization that the relationships of his lifetime have disappeared to either death or senility, and discovers his place as a burden in the logistic and financial life of his now smaller family.

With slipping morals and mind, Henry dabbles in the proliferation of potent prescriptions while he is relieved of his responsibilities and worldly possessions.

Pete –an impetuous, avowedly self-absorbed writer — and Dave — a pithy banker with a “genius for generosity” — had maintained a close friendship since their first days at college. They stood as Best Man for each other; they are godfathers to each other’s sons.

That bond cracks during one visit in their mid-thirties, and since then neither can say with any satisfaction why. In their ensuing letters, both men begin speaking with a candor they never shared face-to-face, and over 15 years they break down and rebuild what each thought of the other, and of themselves, sifting the remains of a friendship dissolved and youth passed.
