I said something so ridiculous yesterday that if someone else had said it I would have questioned if they could use a zipper. My friend was wearing socks that had a word on it that I had read in my head with a slight french accent and emphasis on the second syllable. I mentioned I loved her bright red socks and become confused when she said that she was looking for another pair that had eggs on it. I mistakenly confessed that I had misread the word “Bacon”. Right then and there my bacon lovers membership card was revoked and the laughter erupted. If I had been a teen I would have died. Instead I basked in the laughter and got a wicked craving for some bacon.

There are approximately one-hundred-and-sixty million women living in America. This is a story of just one woman. As the story unfolds Linda gradually learns that some people do deserve to die, but that she is not one of those people.

Linda Darby is a seven-year divorcee, living quietly in a small let-the-world-go-by beach town on the coast of Oregon, who day trades for a living. Her only close friend is a widowed elderly woman who manages a small consulting company, which, as is later discovered, never has visitors, sends and receives its business correspondence only by courier, and is not listed in any phone directory. No one in town knows what kind of consulting the company does, but the rumor is that whatever they do is done for the government.

Linda doesn’t date local men. When her celibacy grows intolerable, she visits nearby towns to frequent the watering holes of successful men. Her motto: No relationships. No second dates. No use of her real name during one-night stands.

Then one evening, Linda goes for a walk and nothing for her is ever the same. She is dragged into an alley by two men, but saved by a third, a stranger who disappears as suddenly as he appeared. The next day she finds out the two men in the alley had been killed, the town’s first murders ever. The following day she learns that hours before she had been dragged into the alley, her close friend was tortured and killed. The next night, she awakens several hours after going to bed to find a man sitting in her bedroom, watching her.

In the days that follow, events stretching all the way to the nation’s capital change who Linda is, what she thinks, and how she will live the rest of her life.

Essential Ceausescu

The Life of Romanian Communist Dictator Nicolae Ceausescu: Road to Hell Paved with Good Intentions

A black dog licks at a puddle of blood in which two old people lie, executed on Christmas day in the Targoviste garrison, Romania. Following a kangaroo trial, a special tribunal sentenced them to death by shooting in December 1989 for “serious crimes against the people of Romania.” He died instantly. The woman died a minute later, after the execution squad’s paratroop captain furiously emptied another round in her. Thus Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu’s five-decade journey together ended, after they started from the bottom, seized power, and grew old while ruling the country.

Who Was That Man They Killed on Christmas Day

Adulated for all of his 24 years in power, during which he came to personify Romania, Romanian communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu – dethroned and replaced by some of his former barons – was turned into a scapegoat for all the evils done to Romanians. But the question remains: Between these two extremes, who was the real Nicolae Ceausescu ?

During his regime, Ceausescu’s image had been painted in sparkling white. Once he was killed – everything turned to pitch black. This documentary aims to paint a portrait in color, with all shades of grey included, combining the good and bad, the light and the dark extremes of the life of Nicolae Ceausescu (aka Ceaucescu).

This book is a concise journalistic style account of Ceausescu’s life, following his path through:

  • A miserable childhood
  • A boyhood in prisons
  • A rising youth in the Romanian Communist Party
  • The honeymoon of his beginnings as the youngest ever political leader in Europe
  • Times of glory and seizing absolute power
  • The rough years of decline
  • A violent death
  • Ceausescu 101

Dear reader – stop here for a second, please!

You should know from the very beginning this is not an exhaustive, academic paper. Author Catalin Gruia is a veteran journalist who has written and reported for the Romanian edition of National Geographic for over 10 years. What you’ll find here is a concise journalistic account of Ceausescu’s life.

Raised in the Bronx, Eddie Ferrara has his first encounter with organized crime as a teenager and it eventually leads to the death of one of his closest friends. The events that follow rapidly lead him into ‘the life’. Eddie’s story spans twenty years and takes us from a mob ‘social club’ to a Silicon Valley startup, from the Brooklyn waterfront piers to a bordello in the Bronx, and from Lincoln Center to the neighborhood coffee shops and restaurants of New York City.

Lately Eddie has entertained the notion of marriage and of leaving ‘the life’, only to realize he is a victim of his own success. Although he is not a fully made member of the family, odds are his leaving would be handled as if he were, that is he’d be ‘retired’ with two bullets to the back of his head. Eddie uses guile and intelligence to outclass his rivals, but will he risk everything in an attempt to get out alive, or is he destined to remain…connected.
