I’m getting that crazy feeling again. That feeling that I should make something or try something way out of my comfort zone to shake things up a bit. My poor hubby. I am pretty sure it drives him nuts when I get the crazy eyes. I bet he just hopes it won’t involve him having to build something or exercise.

Surpassing even loyalty to country, the desire for revenge can sear white-hot and be as addictive and as all-consuming as the strongest opiate.

German agents Elsa Gable and Chris Schulte grew up together in a Germany ravaged by the Great War. They became inseparable as they matured into more than friends, more than family. They had a bond no one could destroy, at least that’s what Chris believed until the night of December 2, 1938.

Not the typical spy murder mystery, Southern Cross is a unique tale of double agents, espionage, revenge, and murder leading investigators from a morgue in Manhattan to the SS Southern Cross, a passenger liner sailing from New York to Cuba. Forced to use limited resources, a doctor from San Francisco and a young Paris police inspector scramble to uncover a vicious murderer before another passenger is killed, and before the ship docks in Havana and five-hundred travelers flood the pier.

If you are one of those people who read the last page first . . . don’t.

My Home Sweet Rome: Living (and Loving) in the Eternal City
Sari Gilbert
4.8 Stars (8 Reviews)
Genre: Biographies & Memoirs | History

FREE for a limited time

It’s a wonderful place to visit, but would you want to live there? Sari Gilbert, who has lived for close to 40 years in what many have called the Eternal City, answers with a resounding “yes….. but”. A native New Yorker who moved to Rome after finishing graduate school and then became a journalist, Gilbert’s book “My Home Sweet Rome: Living (and Loving) in the Eternal City” describes what life is really like in the Italian capital: to sum it up, “fascinating, and delightful, but not at all easy”.

Many foreigners have moved to Italy, but relatively few have decided to stay on for the rest of their lives, unless they are married and have put down family roots. Gilbert uses her own particular status – as an attractive and single woman, as a journalist for major U.S. and Italian news organs, and as an American – as a magnifying lens to examine the various aspects of Italian and Roman life. She gives us an unveiled view of the country’s politics, its stifling bureaucracy, its contradictory social customs, everyday concerns and gastronomical habits.

Gilbert also takes us through the less pleasant phases of recent Italian history: Mafia, terrorism, the assassination attempt on the life of the first (but not the last) non-Italian Pope, the meteoric rise of Silvio Berlusconi. In the process, we learn what it is like to work in Italy as both a foreign correspondent and a local reporter for Italian newspapers. Even more intriguing perhaps, Gilbert sheds light on what love and sex are really like with Italian men, be they average Giuseppes or high-placed movers and shakers.

Paige W. Pendleton
4.7 Stars (44 Reviews)
Genre: Children’s eBooks

FREE for a limited time

An unholy ritual, a ticking clock. Four children discover there are things that go bump in the night …

Centuries ago a group of Elves committed an unholy ritual. But the ritual was a spectacular failure. It transformed the Elves into the Noctivagi – the beings we know as vampires.

Striving to maintain a fragile peace, the ancient Elves and Dwarves negotiated an Accord, which they’ve renewed every year on the Summer Solstice. The ceremony depends on the magical Rune Stone, but it’s missing. If it is not found—and quickly—the consequences could be dire, and not just for Elves and Dwarves.

Four children, Rob, Jack, Eleanor, and Flora, stumble into a world of magic and mayhem when they move into Black Ledge, the old estate on the Maine coast, and discover they aren’t the only ones who live there.
