I love murder mysteries. .that's all I read and I love to browse the section for free or discount books so I can read books and sample new authors. Well Angela Henry is a great author. A great combination of wit humour and mystery. Easy to read writing style and you won't guess 'who done it' until it is revealed. Lots of twists and turns without being ridiculously convoluted.
And amateur sleuth kendra is just awesome. Your everyday hardworking girl who just stumbles on some strange scenarios. ..and murder! Buy and read this and you will want to read the whole kendra mystery series!
I look forward to her next adventure!

I love the Kendra Clayton Series. I didn't I read this book out of series order, I read this after book 4. I hesitated as I thought I didn't need to go back as I 'got it', but as I was one step from the (at the time) last book SSW, I wanted to a delay the end and went to Book 1. I was not disappointed, yet again a very good read. Angela Henry has become one of my favourite authors from reading these books, then I read The Paris Secret and was well and truly hooked. Keep on entertaining us Angela Henry

Good story and cultural diversity, a winning combination

Kendra Clayton, 28, works part-time as a GED instructor, and part-time as a server at her uncle’s restaurant. She’s naturally curious, and when a friend’s low-life boyfriend is murdered, both Kendra and the friend are suspects. Kendra knows she’s not guilty, and she can’t believe her friend is either, so she sets out to find out who really did it.

This has been on my Kindle for a while and finally bubbled to the top of the TBR pile. I don’t know why I didn’t read it sooner – interesting plot, engaging characters, nice balance of mystery and possible romance, and a surprise ending. I particularly enjoyed that Clayton is African American, which is a rarity in most mysteries. I appreciate cultural diversity in my reading, especially when it’s coupled with a good plot, likeable characters, great scene setting, and surprise elements. I liked this one enough that I bought book 2 when I finished this one. I look forward to spending more time with Kendra, her extended family, meddling grandmother, and seeing how her life turns out.

Slow, Long Descriptions, Twisted Plot

Kendra Clayton is trying to clear her name and that of her best friend of suspicion of murder. The writing is good. The mistakes are minimal. There are long descriptions of everything from people's clothing, rooms, buildings, people, etc. etc. None of it has anything to do with the plot or the flow of the story. These descriptions made the story drag quite a bit. I almost gave up on finishing this book more than once. I did like the plot and it did have a lot of twists and turns. Over all this book was ok but nothing special.
