Robin, a fan of a Survivor-like TV reality show call Holdout, manages to become a contestant, quits her job to play, and participates in an island adventure involving various teams, individual and group trials, popularity contests, and votes among players and judges regarding fitness to continue and, ultimately, pick a winner. She returns home after her show, upset with herself for having been conned by a male contestant who played her off against a rival and dumped her to improve his chances of winning the big prize.
Holdout, taped months ago, starts running on TV, with Robin's family and friends watching. This is a cruel and funny concept. Robin, a young adult, is now subject to evidence-based critiques from friends and family for all the mistakes, bad judgments, and so forth Holdout presents. Poor Robin, already filled with self-doubt, now gets to hear what everyone else has to say.
Meanwhile, Robin has been selected for jury duty. Ostercamp presents reality show episodes and trial phases concurrently, chapter by chapter, and the parallel is obvious. Evidence is presented and judgments are made in both, and each must ultimately choose winners and losers. Obstacles complicate judgments. Holdout is show business, staged to maximize ratings, possibly rigged. Trial judgments are influenced by lawyer skill, evidence quality, jury fitness, and other factors. The story presents other obvious parallels in terms of the behavior and character of reality show participants and jurors, and achieving a just outcome.
In addition to the clever plot architecture, Ostercamp writes well and creates a likable character in Robin, feminine yet strong, with the courage to stand up for what she believes.

The novel is great from its opening, as we are left wondering about what happened on The Holdout, and the story remains gripping throughout as the two storylines (the present and The Holdout) unfold.
I found Robin to be a relatable character and her journey to find her confidence (and love along the way!) to be finely executed - she's clever, capable, flawed and utterly endearing. She wants more out of life than ending up an office drone, and she does what she can to make that happen. Her interactions with her family are touching, sometimes sad and very realistic. Throughout the book she tries to prove to her older brothers, cousins and dad that she's just as tough as capable as any of them, and she learns about herself and re-evaluates her ideas about justice in the process. I particularly loved Lucy, who was warm, supportive and quirky. The author also wrote one great hero - a down-to-earth real guy who is kind, warm and effortlessly sexy. Definitely a keeper.
Truly enjoyed this book, from (digital) cover to cover!

I really liked the topic of the book because it is something current and the reader can feel closer to what is happening. The issue of trust is present and I always like that topic because I think it is a good tool so that the narrative finds some twists as it happens with this one.
All in all, The Holdout is a novel I recommend reading.

I was wrong. Robin was a terrific character and by the time of the family dinner (with the challenge) - I was REALLY rooting for her :)
Interesting and well-rounded supporting characters - but what particularly sold me on it was how well-structured the whole book was. I actively dislike books that go back and forward in time because they're often either confusing, irritating or both. This one wasn't - it was so smoothly done - it felt natural and moved the book along very swiftly. The juxtaposition of the current jury service and the voting on the island was clever.
I recommend it.
