The latest in a long line of westerns from author Van Holt, this one is quick to set the scene for the reader with a bit of background into the main character, ‘Shiloh’ Stark, who takes his nickname from one of the bloodiest battles in the American Civil War where he made his reputation by the use of his handgun, a big old Colt. Now ten years after the war, Stark travels the South-Eastern USA, and even the Holy Land, Europe and South America trying to find somewhere which doesn’t get him involved in some gunfight or other. Of course, he can’t find such a place; otherwise there’d be no point to this book. He has to kill wherever he travels in the world. The action opens with him taking out two good ole boys in a dusty small town saloon and quickly moves on from there.
I did find this book a wee bit formulaic and the attempt to write in the Southern States accent fell a bit flat for me, but nevertheless, it was easy to read and I didn't have to dwell too much on any particular part, rather just letting the book flow from page to page. I guess what you’ll want to know is …did Shiloh fond the peace he obviously craved? Well, you will have to read the book yourself to find the answer to that question. You will enjoy your read through though, that I can assure you.
