Have you ever sat at work and thought about leaving the rat race behind? Do you secretly question if it all makes sense, fantasizing about moving to a white sand beach in the tropics to live the easy-breezy life in paradise?
Well, Norm Schriever did just that.

Frustrated and unfulfilled with his comfortable existence in the States, successful businessman Norm Schriever knows there is something more he is supposed to do with his life. So, he quits his job, sells and donates all of his possessions, and moves down to Tamarindo, Costa Rica, with nothing but a laptop and a surfboard, vowing to chase his long-forgotten dream of being a writer.

But Norm soon finds that paradise has its dark side, and the perfect life in a little seaside town isn’t always as easy as it seems. Whether it’s adapting to the local customs and the language barrier, dodging lawless drug traffickers and corrupt cops, or spending “quality time” in a Third World prison, Norm always keeps his sense of humor and forges ahead, intent on finding the paradise he has been looking for.

Will Norm achieve his dream, and gain a new appreciation for life, love, and happiness in one of the most beautiful places on earth? Or will he succumb to the jungle heat, scorpions, and machete-wielding marauders? Grab your sunblock and buckle up, because you’re in for a gonzo blast of laughter and adventure…south of normal.

5,0 su 5 stelle Coming of age...
Recensito in Canada il 26 giugno 2014
First off Norm, if you read this....you annoyed the hell out of me for the first half of the book since most of your life's issues came from being an idiot. That being said the turning point for me was when I read about your run in with the law when you were younger...I felt like that though that struggle I got to see where some of that hardness and callus came from.

By the end of the book I found myself resonating with what you were saying and have been recommending this book to all of my water loving friends. Thanks for taking the time to share your story.

Cheers,
Z

Norm Schriever has done it again! His second book (kind of a follow up of sorts to "Pushups in the Prayer Room") is even better than his first! His first book focuses on his roudn the world travels, while this book kind of "zooms in" or "drills down" on just exactly what its like for an American to uproot his entire life, sell it all or donate it, and move by himself to a foriegn country. His detail and descriptions of daily living in Cost Rica and trying to write his book, all while making regular trips to smuggle goods to his friend inside a thrid world jungle prison, navigate the tricky and treacherous locals, the shady characters in the drug trade really transports you to the settings and you feel like you really know him and are part of the trip yourself. I think my favorite parts of the book are when Norm talks about some of the tricks, scams and general ball busting the locals, and eventually himself, inflict upon the clueless tourists. The overall message of this book goes far beyond all of this however, and really opens up your mind to think about larger philosphical topics from what being "free" really means, to just exactly how each of us impact each others lives on a daily basis with even the smallest of actions. The great humor in the book really helps to amplify just how deep the authors thoughts really get at times. If you consider yourself to be, or want to be, more of a citizen of the world than just a citizen of your little slice of the of it, than this book really hits home.

4,0 su 5 stelle Delightful!

At first I thought I wouldn't like the book. In the beginning it appeared to be about a middle-aged man who escaped "normal" society to live a (much cheaper) debauched life of drugs and alcohol abuse and mindless sex with young women. But I continued reading the book, mainly because I am also an expat who chucked life in the US to live in a small town in the highlands of Panama. (And there are many expats here who ARE living "a debauched life of drugs, alcohol, and sex with young women." These old geezers are able to attract the young women because they think all expats are RICH, even if the geezers are eking by on social security. And we are "wealthy" (financially) in comparison to many of the locals.)

But when I got further into Norm's story, only one of the expats (Pistol) fit the "debauchery" description - although Norm did write about his own copious consumption of alcohol numerous times. In many ways Norm's story was about his quest for adventure and spiritual awareness with some great laugh-out-loud moments along the way.

I moved to Panama nine years ago. The Latin culture has always "called" to me. I've explored many countries in Central and South America and enjoyed them all. In 2004 I came to the town (where I now live) for two weeks, and three months later I had left the US behind and was living here permanently. I love the more simple life without cookie-cutter tract homes (including cookie-cutter McMansions) and strip malls that have the same boring stores to serve the more-more-more consumer society. And I have found a way to be of service to my community. I have not been back to the US and don't intend to go.

I'm rating the book 4 instead of 5 because there were numerous grammatical errors. Since Norm has contact information on his web page, I will email him privately with hope to give him constructive criticism. And for any writer, I recommend "A Writer's Reference" by Diane Hacker. This little book is a gold mine for writers.

I read that Norm is now living and writing in Vietnam. I am much older than Norm and I previously had responsibilities in the US which prevented my permanent exodus at a younger age. I'm glad that Norm is able to pursue his adventures at a relatively young age. I wish him happy travels.

Update: I sent the author via his email some helpful suggestions regarding errors in his book. He never even responded to me. On the other hand, I did the same for Thomas L. Scott, author of Voodoo Daddy and other books, and he responded with his thanks. We had several pleasant email exchanges after that.

As far as I'm concerned, when an author (such as Norm Schriever) doesn't even bother to acknowledge an email from a reader, I won't bother to buy any more of his books.

Here's the part of my email in which I tried to help him by pointing out the errors:

Norm, here are the errors I spotted. (When there was more than one instance of an error, I often just noted it once.)

1) COLOMBIA, not Columbia!...Misused LOTS of times in your book.

2) I've observed that the misuse of the verbs "to lie" (recline) and "to lay" (usually, to put something somewhere), is the most consistent error made by writers.

...up to arctic blizzard level and LAID on the bed... (and LAY on the bed)
...I just LAID there... (I just LAY there)
...I was trying to LAY low...(trying to LIE low)
...he wanted to LAY low...(he wanted to LIE low)
...and LAID down to sleep...(LAY down to sleep)
...she said and LAID back (LAY back)

3) Also in many books there is often misuse of personal pronouns:

...chain smoke all morning, both HER and Disco... (both SHE and Disco)
...my U.S. number so HER or Theresa (so SHE or Theresa)

4) ...everything from my CANKLES on up...merely a type of "ankles"

5) ...so there were LESS people...(FEWER people)

6) ...tengo CUARANTA años...tengo cuarEnta años

7) ...sit over HEAR on this end... (HERE)

8) ...placed it next to HER'S (placed it next to HERS - no apostrophe!)

As I mentioned in my review, I recommend A Writer's Reference by Diana Hacker. This little book makes it really easy to find the correct use of just about anything in English!

Happy travels!

Title should be, Norm Goes South - a year in the social life of Norm
Only got this book cause a friend was reading it and did not have any books for my new iPad. I though it would be about Costa Rica but instead found myself reading a soap opera on the sleazy side of a small town on the north west corner of Costa Rica. I am not a fast reader but was able to speed read this book; well, thats all I can say.
