I bought this book for my niece and oh my gosh, she just loves it. Her mom reads it every single night and at least once during the day she says, when she calls. The book goes with them on every trip, it's like it won't leave my nieces side. This is one of those books that will always have a part in her life and will be passed down from generation to generation. Great job...

This is a well illustrated children's book. The story is simple, but more attention could have been given to the editing.
I think the book would have been better without the 'moral' at the end, or with a different moral. I greatly preferred the tailor who was happy with a good quality secondhand hat to the lord who wanted to show off his hat, and by implication, his wealth, at the outside of the church.

I read this story, and honestly, I expected to get some really good moral out of the story. The illustrations were fantastic, but the story line was nothing to write home about. Pretty useless. I am sorry, and I don't like to give negative reviews...but I expected more.

I liked the story that integrates with incredible images.
The moral of all that cheaper is not worth it was important to me.
I explained to the children to keep in examine and sometimes spend a little more to get a lot more.

This is literally the last page of the book - "The moral: sometimes it is worth investing a little more money to enjoy a new hat each year."

How is that a moral? And if it is, how is this relevant to children? The author has failed to convince that it isn't better to keep the same hat each year and save your money. The author hasn't convinced that you should judge people by appearances and be a slave to the latest fashions as this book displays and recommends. The main character is as vain as a peacock, and is not someone I would want my children to emulate. Crowds who judge on outward appearances strike me as shallow.

You can extrapolate some value from the story by looking at the other character in the story - the one who is content with a second-hand hat. Teaching kids that second-hand items in general still have worth. But in general we don't go around sharing hats, and kids don't wear fancy hats, so this lesson could have used much, much better subject material to address that moral.
