Empress Maria Theresa of Austria has sent secret agents Paul Müller and Franz Braun to Prussia to assassinate King Frederick the Great. The King’s preoccupation with the visiting musical master, Johann Sebastian Bach, offers a host of opportunities for the two secret agents to make inroads. However, the pair mistakenly underestimates the unscrupulous and cruel Prussian Minister of Police, Baron Manfred von Hochenheimer.

Paul and Franz concoct plans to deceive the Minister, but their trickeries merely thwart their own efforts. The two conclude that, in order to kill Frederick the Great, they will have to first eliminate the man who so staunchly protects the royal subject. They carry out a revised strategy and unexpectedly receive aid from an insurgent on his own crusade. However, each small success Franz and Paul achieve seems to set them further back from their ultimate goal of slaying the King.

Pursued by Prussian border guards, they are forced to flee Berlin on foot and seek the guidance of their prudent spymaster. In the safe haven of Vienna, the three men employ various tactics for gaining intelligence on the King. Ordered back to Prussia to finalize their mission, Paul and Franz must fool overzealous innkeepers, foresters, soldiers and secret police. Can they outwit the Prussian forces and attack the throne? Or will their fraudulent behavior have a rebound effect that propels them toward a future of torture and execution?

After 26 years as a professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, Steve Schach, a Cape Town, South Africa native, recently moved to Sydney, Australia. Before he began writing thrillers, Steve wrote 13 best-selling software engineering textbooks, which are used in universities all over the world. Down Under, Steve intended to become a full-time grandfather, and limit his intellectual activities to solving cryptic crossword puzzles and avidly watching Sesame Street with his grandchildren. However, the urge to write proved to be far too strong to overcome, hence Old Bach Is Come.

I couldn't quite decide whether this was funny or terrible. So terrible it's funny, perhaps? The dialogue is implausible from the very first page. There is a coherent thread of plot throughout, but the spy scenarios are comically absurd and come so fast that they trip over each other. The editing was ok but not great, with "Johann" Bach on the first page and "Johan" on the last. Overall I would recommend Donald Westlake as a better example of this type of self-mocking humor.

Steve Schach Has Crafted A Masterpiece

First let me admit the bias of previous acquaintance with Steve Shach from our days in Nashville, TN. Likewise let me admit that I have only read one other book of his, a book of interest to neither readers of fiction nor his former engineering students at Vanderbilt University. So to find him writing fiction is an unexpected joy.

Upon reading Old Bach Is Come one is immediately drawn to a very unique period in European history, the reign of Frederick the Great in Prussia. Steve has selected an era when international rivalries were rampant, and the ruler of one country could certainly conceive of assassinating another ruler. It is in this setting that we are presented with a tale if espionage and intrigue involving not only Frederick the Great himself, but the greatest musician of his era, Johann Sebastian Bach, the "Old Bach" of the title.

What happens, how, and importantly, why, are deftly handled by a new voice in historical fiction. I believe that Steve Schach has set himself a new challenge, and risen strongly to the occasion. He has crafted a masterpiece worthy of Old Bach himself. If you enjoy historical fiction convincingly told, buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

I really enjoyed the book - the spies/secret agents from a period and place pretty foreign to me was very interesting, although the two that the book focused on loved convoluted plans. The final twist... I didn't really see it coming, but I didn't get to sit and devour this book, like I do with most. Overall, a good mind candy read, and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

phrases like 'hook line and sinker' not used in era of this fictional piece. Too little descriptions of settings. Repetitions of conversations aggravated me so I would recommend this to nobody
