The only place Leda can relax is with a warm cup of ginger -flavored soup in the dining tent, huddled in her jacket around the unexpected folding table and chairs carried up the mountain on the shoulders of the porters.

Shared meals around the table become a place of fellowship for their hiking group, a place where Leda forms a romantic connection with the enigmatic Wyatt.

Both new and old relationships are tested along the trail; bonds formed over time and shared experiences are stretched to the breaking point during the ascent.

The mounting physical and emotional toll of the climb weighs on the group, leading even their guide to question whether he will continue after this summit effort.

Will any reach the fabled summit? Or will the mountain have the final say?

Picked up the book because of the setting. The twists and turns of the plot kept me wondering what would happen next. A hard book to set down!

Upon reading this book I left a piece of my heart on a mountain I've never seen.

Janice coy transports you with a vivid description of a journey most will never get to experience.

The fictional characters she brought to this book to tell the story pull you in until you find yourself encouraging them not to give up. I had to pause on pg. 199 before I could push for the end. But I am glad I did.

I loved her incorporation of literary quotes that's seemed perfectly suited to this story.

I never wanted to climb a mountain before reading this book and definitely don't want to now 😂
but maybe a small one will pop up in my future.

Thank you Janice for this lovely story.

This is a wonderful story of self discovery and pushing limits. Each character has a different inner drive to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. The reasons unfold as the story unfolds. As the climbers march towards the summit, the story continues to unfold in unexpected and insightful ways. I kept thinking that there couldn't be any more plot twists, but they kept coming, right to the end. I always hope that I will not have figured out how the book ends before I finish it. Janice Coy, once again, did not disappoint. Both this book, and A Grave in the Vegetable Garden, keep you engaged and wanting to know more. I found this to be a book that I kept wanting to pick back up, and that I missed when I was finished. Keep writing, Janice!

This book kept you reading and even with the various story lines and family affairs, you wanted to know what was going to happen next. With the large numbers climbing the mountain these days I would never be interested in climbing it. Lived within sight of the mountain for most of my life and still enjoy looking at "Kili". The family sure did have their share of events. Read it soon!

I'm grateful for air and for beds and for working toilets and flat ground, muscles that don't hurt and a stomach that isn't rebelling, because I'm not climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. If you ever wondered what it's really like, without travelogue hyperbole and movie star heroism, this novel illustrates it beautifully. So much of real life is about a bunched up sock, a runny nose, and an argument with your father and its demoralizing effect. Props to the author for climbing the mountain and telling the real story of the experience, but wrapping it in a fictionalized story of family secrets and values to keep you turning the page.
