This is a nifty little novella -- a short episode in the chaotic life of private investigator Nicholas Colt. But there's no need to have read any of the other Colt books or stories. This one works entirely as stand-alone, a gripping thriller where a trip to the shops goes totally haywire when the hero stops to take on a hitchhiker.*
There's no real mystery here, no crime to investigate or solve. Instead it's a taut tale of Russian roulette with a pit of snakes awaiting the winner. Jude Hardin has the trick of sweeping the reader along with the action -- so although I intended to read this in a couple of chunks, instead I took a long tea-break and devoured it in one big (snake) bite.
Fun. Of the slightly scary sort.
