Her first book was released in 2007 entitled, "The Smartt View: Life, Love, and Cluttered Closets." Public speaking is Lisa's passion. She has spoken to groups around the country on subjects like "Contentment in a Discontent World" and "We're All in the Same Boat, So Grab a Lifeline." Lisa believes laughter is a gift and LOVES to share with others her personal weaknesses, struggles, and the sheer JOY of daily living!

Well written story set in a small southern town and featuring likeable characters

An entertaining, easy to read story featuring 32 year old Carlie, who has been working at a convenience store in a small town in Georgia for the past
ten years. Having dropped out of college when she was young, she has now gone back and is about to graduate. Carlie has a number of issues including the fact that she is very tall for a woman, is overweight and has never been in a serious relationship with a man. One evening, one of her regular elderly customers slips her his nephew's card suggesting she contact him. Although she initially intended to throw the card away, she is fond of the elderly customer and loves the relationship he has with his wife of many years, whom he still treats with love and tenderness. This is just how she would like her lifetime relationship to end up. So she decides to email Doug. The story starts off slowly but the author has an easy going style and manages to put you in the picture without wasting a lot of time. The two main characters are likeable and down to earth, and we get to meet lots of interesting family members and friends and are given a descriptive picture of life in a small southern town.
This is a well written story and the author manages to change scenes effortlessly.
There are low-key Christian undertones and a few unexpected twists of fate.

Doug and Carlie meet in an unusual way. Carlie works in the Dollar General store in Georgia and one of her regular customers gives her Doug's card (he is a relative of Doug's) and says she will like him and should contact him. So she emails Doug and they correspond then decide to meet in a town half way between where they each live. They see each other for a while and life is not easy for either of them but they are always there for each other. Carlie has written a book which gets published and she moves to New York City to start on a new career. Doug doesn't want to move so they drift apart but think about each other often.

Carlie is a likable character. She is funny and accepting of her flaws like that she is very tall for a woman and 37 pounds over the ideal weight for her height. She is old to be single at 32 and has worked at the Dollar General for ten years just finishing her degree now. Doug is a good match for her because he hasn't dated much either. At 28 that is unusual but he sure isn't your usual 28 year old male. Relatives are always trying to set him up on dates and he politely goes on them but hasn't found anyone worth seeing more than once until Carlie. I really liked that the characters weren't perfect.

I liked the writing style in Doug and Carlie. It flowed well and was interesting to get both Doug and Carlie's POV. It was romantic but funny and sometimes sad. Loved it. I thought it was a bit far fetched that they were both virgins though. That stuck out as being really odd. Especially for Doug waiting for ‘the one’.

Franchement, j'ai toujours eu du mal avec ces soi-disant "late bloomers" comme Carlie....On nous dit qu'elle a un rêve...certes, mais elle semble tout de même manquer d'ambition. Et qu'a t'elle fait jusqu'à présent. Et bien, rien....
En vérité, elle m'a un peu barbée la Carlie, sa vie n'est pas palpitante, et même quand elle semble le devenir, Carlie n'apprécie pas et du coup, le lecteur s'ennuie aussi.
Le héros s'évère quant à lui encore plus dépourvu de saveur.
En bref, un petit couple bien gentil, mais sans intérêt.

Really loved this book, downloaded it because it was on a promotion and free at the time via kindle - so glad I did (although would be totally worth buying!!). Brilliantly written, funny, read it in a day as got so involved in the story, would like to read some more from this author - excellent!!!

Yesterday I purchased the third book in the Carlie and Doug series. Since it has been almost a year since I read books one and two I felt the need to reread them both before I started on book three. The enormity of this authors talent slapped me in the face full force. Lisa Smartt is an amazing author who weaves a tale like no other. Her humor is incomparable as I laughed out-loud throughout the whole book. Even in emotionally challenging situations she manages to give Doug and Carlie a sense of humor and it seems to bond them together.

Carlie Ann Davidson is 32 years old and will finally graduate college in a few months. Her love life in non-existent. She's 37 pounds over her ideal weight. She's honest and brilliant and has worked at the Dollar General Store for ten years. Her passion is writing. She is more than ready to find the love of her life but there are no prospects in sight.

Twenty-eight year old Doug Jameson is the single great-nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Rockford who are dear friends of Carlie's. When Mr. Davidson made a trip to the Dollar General Store for his beloved wife, he decides to give Carlie Doug's business card and encourages her to contact him. This is where it all begins. It is quite a lovely, yet sometimes sad and always humorous, story as we watch these two get to know each other.

I loved every single word and I highly recommend this book.

FIRST REVIEW

I'm moving down two books on my All Time Favorite Top 5 books to make room for the First and Second Books in the Doug and Carlie Series. That is saying something since I read more than 300 books a year. (I gotta wonder if that has anything to do with my messy house?)

I absolutely loved this book. I loved it so much that when I completed my read and got to the very back, I saw where there was a Part 2. Wrong thing for me to see as I finished Book 1 around 1-1:30am. Tried to sleep but was back up within 20 minutes digging out my Kindle. Stayed up and read all of Book 2 and finally took a nap at 6am. At my age it takes a while to bounce back from an all-nighter. But it was so worth it.

I love Lisa's writing. She is one funny lady and the story was a wonderful, sweet love story.

There have only been less than five books that have been good enough for me to reread. This is one of them.

I really can't express how much I love this book. There are no words to properly convey how much I loved it and how much I learned. It was uplifting.

Lisa you rock!!
