Gripping read with a clever plot

'Rejection' is a gripping novel that will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next and Whodunnit. I could see the film in my head as the story unfolded - although I may have closed my eyes for some of the more grisly bits. The plot is a clever idea that helps bring together the worlds of writers and cops, especially as Drake is a cop who writes. As with many fictional (and, I guess, actual) cops, his personal life is almost as much of a mess as his working life. Watching everything work itself out was an interesting and enjoyable experience. I recommend it.

Although there were some editing errors in the book (noted by reviewers elsewhere) they were not numerous or irritating enough to detract from my enjoyment.

This is the first book by Thomas K. Matthews that I have read, and I am sorry it took so long for me to read it.

I consume books, read with every spare minute I have, and have since I learned to read. From the classics to thrillers, I am hooked if the story is good. I walk down the aisles of the library and pick by the spine and name. I can see a cover and tell you if I have read it, and sometimes I am hard pressed to find something I haven't read. Once I find an author I love, one who captivates me, I will read their entire body of work.

The highest praise I can give an author is I will read everything they ever wrote, or will write in the future based on just their name, and that is what I give to Thomas Matthews. I don't know how else to say it.

Don't read this while eating, or do so if you are dieting, because you won't want to eat! Hide the knives, and hold on for a hell of a ride.

This is a classic crime novel, one that was written for our genre at the blog Men Reading Books. Matthews has created a compelling character in Lou Drake, an NYPD detective who was once the golden boy of the detective squad. However, 10 years earlier, Drake was involved in a very high profile murder case that looked like a slam dunk against a wealthy mover-shaker type guy, until the last second before court when the case fell apart as witnesses started changing their testimony and an unlikely lowlife criminal confessed. Accused of wrong doing in the case, Drake was demoted to patrol where he was supposed to live out his career on the police force until his retirement and pension. Currently, Drake was bitter and broken. With only six months to go before retirement, in the midst of drowning in self-pity, Drake screwed up in his basic role at a new crime scene. Captain Andrade decided that the only way to keep Drake from being fired and losing his pension was to put him in the booking cage where he was not apparently a risk to anyone. That transfer did not quite work out like Andrade expected.

Meanwhile, there were two important subplots that were developed by Matthews. First, as another factor in his depression/failure, Drake had tried to write a crime-cop novel that had been rejected by every publisher, and he became a part of a writers' group who had similar frustrations. It's one thing to finish a book and it's another to get it in print. Second, a serial murderer was at work, and the killer was targeting literary agents in one NYNY neighborhood. Matthews successfully brought the several plotlines to a fitting and exciting conclusion that I did not see coming until the end of the book.

This reviewer can only guess that Matthews must have been frustrated with his own efforts to find a literary agent and to get published, so there is a strong undercurrent of humor as one agent after another is gruesomely murdered. Rejection is a good book which gets my recommendation, and I hope to see another Lou Drake book. It was a book that I stayed up too late to finish, and if Matthews can produce more works like this, he has a good chance of landing in the "power rotation" of authors at menreadingbooks.blogspot.com.

BRILLIANT - this is the first novel I have read by Thomas k Matthews and I can't wait to read another. this is gripping from start to finish and I found it hard to put down. I am now waiting for the next Lou Drake mystery and if it is as good as the first, this author is going to the very top - definitely in the same league as John Lutz

Have you ever felt that events have unjustly fenced in your life? Hobbled the thoroughbred in you, turning you into a plow horse? If you have, you'll relate to Lou Drake, a more than capable cop torn down by corrupt influences in the police department. Copping is all Lou knows and, despite the cynical growth sprouting on his attitude, copping is all he still wants to do. Well, except for writing the next great mystery story. His life stalls on both fronts. Yeah. We can all relate to Lou Drake on some level. Eventually, he gets up off the floor, dusts off his attitude and gets back in the game, or maybe events gradually drag him back in. Lou has enemies who pick at him like a scab that won't heal. Well, I don't want to give away anything that will spoil your read so let me just say, do read this one. You won't be sorry. The mystery genre has a new leading man, Lou Drake, and a new creator, Thomas K. Matthews.
