James Campbell is a world expert in crop viruses. Then he's horribly murdered, along with two of his colleagues. Campbell has been working on a secret bio-warfare program for the Pentagon. The murders get the attention of Elizabeth Harker, Director of a covert intelligence unit called the Project.
Nick Carter is Harker's team leader. He struggles with old injuries and PTSD from his years as a combat Marine. Nick is deeply conflicted about his lover and teammate, Selena Connor. Selena's been with the Project for less than a year. She's having a hard time dealing with the mayhem that goes with her job and her feelings about Nick.
Nick and Selena follow a bloody trail through Greece, Bulgaria and America, uncovering a heartless plan to destroy half the world's food supply, part of a strategy by a centuries-old conspiracy to achieve world domination. It will kill millions if it succeeds and time's running out--it's set to happen soon.
Harker is forced to make an unheard of alliance to try and stop the plot and avoid possible war with Russia. All the while, a high-placed traitor does his best to sabotage the Project at every turn. The surprise ending foreshadows the next book in the series.

Alex Lukeman’s Black Harvest (The Project Book 4) is a wonder. I read fiction to be transported somewhere intriguing, and this international thriller delivered in spades. When a writer can take secrecy, loyalty, betrayal and romance and put it all together in a page-turner like Black Harvest, you know you’re in the hands of a master craftsman. That’s evident in the first few pages. I read almost half the book in my first sitting, which is saying quite a lot for me – I’m a super slow reader.

In most novels I read, I have trouble with the concept of “the willing suspension of disbelief.” There are so many elements that can go wrong – stilted dialog, cardboard characters, convenient coincidences, et cetera. These do not exist in Lukeman’s tale. Read this book, and you’ll begin to think of characters Nick Carter and Selena O’Connor as people you know. As they execute their mission (and live their lives) in Bulgaria, the U.S. and Greece, you’ll feel as if you’ve been to those places. Carter is my favorite character – his flaws and challenges are easy to relate to and that makes for a great character who you care about –whether or not you agree with everything he does or thinks.

The technical details Lukeman writes makes me wonder if he was once a government operative, and his knowledge of agriculture and biology makes me wonder if he was also once a farmer with a Ph.D. And when it comes to his insight into history, again, he doesn’t tell you about it, he gives you a tour with a front-row seat.

But what really sold me on Black Harvest was the writing. It’s as spare as Hemingway (especially Old Man and the Sea) and as perceptive as Thomas Berger (Little Big Man). Example of a great line: The Cadillac moved like a silent omen through the unseen streets of Washington.

An unequivocal five stars for Lukeman and Black Harvest – and if you like it as much as I do, don’t miss the other books in the series.

“The Black Harvest” is the 4th in Alex Lukeman’s “The Project” series. I have grown to greatly enjoy this series primarily due to his character development. As I have read the books, I have not only come to like his characters, but I have stared to care about this central group of characters who make up the Project. I originally purchased “White Jade,” a fast-paced thriller, on a special deal from Amazon for my Kindle. Since that first book, I have slowly added more and more of Lukeman’s Project books to my Kindle. The series centers on a covert intelligence unit called the PROJECT, which answers directly to the President.

The book starts off with the murders of several genetic scientists. We quickly discover that nine ancient tablets from the time of Alexander the Great reveal the secrets to an ancient crop plague. Supposedly, the spores from the plague are stored in a sealed urn within the hidden treasures of Alexander the Great. A sinister secretive world wide group called AEON is using this information and the ancient plague as a weapon for world domination. AEON, we later discover, has been around for a long, long time. As the story progresses, one is not sure who one can trust . . . especially the rich and powerful of the world. Hold your breath - you are in for a ride!

Early on, the plot strands seem confusing and going in different directions. But what Lukeman has done is crafted an intriguing tale complete with plot twists which will keep the reader reading. What makes “Black Harvest” better than the run-of-the-mill high-concept thrillers are the well-drawn and engaging characters – especially Nick Carter and Selena Connor. Even the other members of The Project are well developed and interesting characters as well. As Baldacci and Steve Berry, Lukeman has a special gift in developing memorable characters for his novels. Now it is time for me to order the fifth book in the series: “The Tesla Secret.” Perhaps it is time for you to order one too?
