My older two, aged nearly-6 and nearly-8, loved this, and I enjoyed it too.
Poor old Ulrich - he's certainly having a rough time, what with his parents "missing presumed eaten by cannibal pygmies" and being sent to live with great-aunt Mrs Lipstick (who is perhaps the most evil character ever!). On hearing who his new guardian is, Ulrich pleads to be sent to an orphanage instead, but to no avail. Then he meets Fing, the monster in the cupboard.
The kids really enjoyed the over-the-top humour and horror of the story such as the ridiculously transparent attempt by Mrs Lipstick to 'accident' Ulrich to his death.
The illustrations are great. It's a proper book, but quite a short one - about 80 pages and with a picture every couple of pages. It probably takes about 30 mins to read aloud from start to finish. It's the second Papa G book we've read (the first being "The Evil Pond"), and the kids are big fans of both. Recommended for aged around 5-9.
