If you believe in justice, read this book!

As I read this book, I could envision a not-so-distant future where the haters, fear-mongers and their complacent followers would allow this result. In the pull between security and freedom, every action taken that reduces freedom means a corresponding loss in our precious rights. All Americans need to examine their beliefs in both their rights and responsibilities, and remember that we are called by our Creator to love, even those who are different or are our enemies. Excellent book. Thank you.

My Favorite Lines:

"`Yeah, well we're not in Kansas anymore, Toto. Let's go.'"

"Ren was the only thing I had in this world, and I had just handed her right back to Ace. I had basically given him the go-ahead to imprison her, rape her, beat her, and possibly kill her."

"If my question hadn't caused a lump in my throat, her thoughtful silence sure did. I could hardly breathe as I awaited her reply. I knew because of the things she'd told me in the past, that there was a real possibility she would answer with a yes. But I wanted to hear no, so badly it hurt."

"`Every bad thing that happens has the possibility to bring about something good,' she said. `Of course I wish it had never happened, but because it did I've learned something very important.'"

What I Thought:

This book was not what I expected.

It starts off with the main characters, Trigg and younger sister Ren, put in a very bad situation that results in them being imprisoned. But do they go to a regular jail? Nope. Instead they find themselves in a place called Township 101 where they're basically imprisoned within a small town, given the rights to move as they want, and given roommates in small houses instead of prison cells.

Sounds good, right? Not at all.

A lot of times when I read, I find myself imagining the books as movies. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. This book would make an awesome movie. It has everything a good movie needs - an intriguing plot, interesting characters, and lots of action and suspense. I stopped trying to predict what would happen midway through, and was very surprised by the ending.

Trigg is a sympathetic character with a story to tell, and it's a story that never gets boring and keeps you guessing as to what will happen next. I'd love a sequel to this book, to see where the characters end up after the events of this novel.

One of the few books I've read in a long time that had me fully and completely engaged. I cried, got mad, and cried some more. I became emotionally involved in these well written characters. The author also managed to add a little social commentary by addressing blind justice without compassion. I will be looking for more of her work to read.

I was pleased with the ending. Much injustice was righted. No wonder justice is pictured as a blind female. It cannot be administered as black or white. Our actions must be examined in context. The quality of mercy can never be abandoned. But sadly there were so many victims in this story, as in the real world.
