The Poisoned Rose (The Gin Palace Trilogy Book 1) (English Edition) Formato Kindle
To a corrupt chief of police intent on maintaining his power at all costs, part-time PI Declan “Mac” MacManus is a problem that must finally be addressed. Cursed with an unwavering sense of right and wrong, and a fierce loyalty to his few friends, Mac has become known as someone the working class of Southampton can turn to in times of desperate need. On a rain-swept night in October, Mac witnesses a brutal homicide, but he has learned that nothing on the East End is ever what it seems. Determined to hunt down an elusive hired killer before he can strike again, Mac is reunited with what is left of a prominent family he once knew well. But something more—something darker than Mac could have possibly foreseen—is at play here, and as a long-hidden secret threatens to emerge, Mac once again becomes the only hope for justice in a town that all too clearly belongs to the rich and powerful.
The Poisoned Rose was a stunning and wondrous debut, and The Bone Orchard only confirmed Daniel Judson’s artistry and unique style, but those two dark gems do not prepare the reader for the huge leap forward that is The Gin Palace. The final outing of Declan “Mac” MacManus, one of our most compelling PIs, shows an author at the very height of his dizzying power. Fresh, vibrant, startling, and beautifully rendered, Judson’s The Gin Palace Trilogy breathes a whole new energy into the genre. -- Ken Bruen, Author of Headstone
Award: Shamus Award Winner, 2002
Reviews:
“This taut thriller is far from predicable, and its dark and mysterious plot suits Judson’s understated writing style"
--Publishers Weekly
“Daniel Judson is so much more than a crime-fiction novelist. He's a tattooed poet, a mad philosopher of the Apocalypse fascinated with exploring the darkest places in people's souls.”
--Chicago Tribune
“Daniel Judson is a thoroughly accomplished writer.”
--Kirkus Reviews

Dalla seconda/terza di copertina
Trouble always seems to find Declan MacManus . . . and it finds him again one rain-swept October night when the part-time P.I.--and full-time outsider--gets caught in the middle of a brutal homicide. To the rich and untouchable of Southampton, longtime locals like MacManus are little more than background scenery. Set up to take the fall in a nasty case of double-dealing and multiple murder, Mac follows a serpentine trail that leads through the murky waters of his past--and into the twisted heart of a prominent East End family he once knew well. As the lines between past and present, rich and poor, right and wrong begin to blur, a decades-old secret emerges from behind the closed doors of the Hamptons moneyed enclaves--and a town sworn to protect its own declares open season on anyone who stands in its way. Mac is first in line. . .

This story is well written, flows smoothy, and is easy to understand despite the large amount going on in this book. It is a story that, once you get into it just a little bit, you will not want to stop reading. This is why I like kindle. I can let it read out loud to me as I do my housework or what ever I am doing.
The characters in this story are really amazing. There are no bright, smiling and perky characters in this story. It is not that type of story. The characters, even despite those 2-3 who have money, are damaged goods. Some more damaged than others. PI Declan "Mac"MacManus is, to me, the least damaged of all of them. Augie is next in line to him. I won't count Augie's daughter Tina as she is still too young. Time will tell for her. Some people grow up in the school of hard knocks, others get warped my money.
Cursed with an unwavering sense of right and wrong, and a loyalty to his few friends, Mas becomes known as someone working class people can turn to in times of desperate need. One night Mac witnesses a brutal homicide. He soon learns that nothing is as it seems though. Mac wants to hunt down this killer before he can strike again.
This is a really good story and I recommend it highly. I would recommend it for age 18 and up due to murders, and discussion of incest.
